An Extended Model of Double Optical Resonance

Abstract

A ladder-type model of double optical resonance, extended by allowing some internal structure for the middle level, is considered and its classical analogue is given. Ionization and photoelectron energy spectra from such a model with singlet, doublet and triplet middle-level structures are evaluated numerically for a wide range of laser pulse intensities and durations. The topics of most interest are peak narrowing by extremely strong upper-level ionization damping, reversal of the peak-height asymmetry by increasing lower-resonance strength at non-zero upper-resonance detuning, and number-of-peak reduction and flattening of the spectrum by shortening of the atom-photon interaction time. When applied to natural barium, this model gives results in good agreement with experiment.

Multi-peakedVersusTwo-peaked Spectrum of Double Optical Resonance

R. Parzyński

Within an analytically solvable model, the theory is studied of the effects of atomic-level structure both on ionisation and on the fluorescence spectrum of double optical resonance. Peaks due to this structure, which appear in addition to the Autler-Townes doublet, can now be given a concise description by means of an analytical formula that has a wide range of application. To illustrate the theory, the formula is applied to the cases of barium and sodium.

Ionization dynamics in double resonance involving autoionizing states in helium: the effect of pulse shapes

Spyros I. Themelis, P. Lambropoulos, M. Meyer

We discuss the dynamics of doubly resonant ionization in helium involving the strong coupling of two doubly excited autoionizing resonances, under the influence of XUV radiation of short duration (DESY FEL) and a synchronized optical laser. We explore the possibility of using the photoelectron spectra to extract information about the pulse shape of the FEL. We present in addition new calculations of the expected AC Stark splitting due to the strong coupling of the two resonances and show that, within the range of intensities and pulse durations expected in the experiments, additional structure, beyond the usual doublet, is to be expected.

Non-Lorentzian laser line shapes and the reversed peak asymmetry in double optical resonance

S. N. Dixit, P. Zoller, P. Lambropoulos

The interaction of an atomic system with a laser having phase fluctuations is studied within the phase-diffusion model, with the finite correlation time of the time derivative of the phase taken into account. This finite correlation time introduces a line shape which is Lorentzian near the center and falls off faster than the Lorentzian at its wings. The authors apply this model to calculate the spectrum of double optical resonance for excitation by a laser having this non-Lorentzian line shape. It is observed that the reversed peak asymmetry reverts to normal far off resonance owing to the cutoff of the laser spectrum, in agreement with recent experiments. Numerical results are presented.

THE ROLE OF RESONANCES IN MULTIPHOTON IONIZATION OF ATOMS WITH SHORT INTENSE LASER PULSES

Rutger B. Vrijen, J. H. Hoogenraad, Lambertus D. Noordam

We present experimental and theoretical data on the electron energy spectra from resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization of atoms. In experiments performed with 594-nm wavelength, linearly polarized laser pulses of 300-fs and 600-fs durations, it is found that excitation of the intermediate resonances during the rising edge of the laser pulse can dominate the electron spectrum. Good agreement is found between the experimental results and a model based on the Landau-Zener energy level crossing theory. Theoretical results obtained with direct integration of the Schrödinger equation show that intermediate resonances can be excited appreciably off resonance if the coupling between the ground state and the excited state is highly nonlinear. The excitation of the intermediate state is not localized at the intensity which makes it six-photon resonant with the ground state. A multilevel model used to simulate the experimental spectra, based on direct integration of the Schrödinger equation, shows excellent agreement with the data.

The many faces of resonances in multiphoton ionization

X. Tang, A. Lyras, P. Lambropoulos

We present a theoretical analysis of multiphoton ionization through resonant intermediate states shifted through resonance during a short, intense pulse. The resonant structure in the photoelectron spectra is compared with what it would be if the peak intensity or the frequency of the laser were scanned, and the various differences are discussed in detail. The dynamical behavior is described in terms of a density matrix evolving under a realistic temporal and spatial pulse shape. Our results, on atoms with realistic parameters, show structure similar to that observed in recent experiments. Results for circularly polarized light are also presented. The limitations and advantages of the model are discussed.

Non-linear optical mixing of frequencies of a strong bichromatic field interacting with a two-level atom at high photon densities

Constantine Mavroyannis, K.J. Woloschuk

We have calculated numerically the excitation spectra arising from the interaction of a two-level atom with two strong electromagnetic fields. In the limit of high photon densities, the excitation spectra are considered when one of two laser fields is at resonance while the frequency of the other laser field is varied as well as when both laser fields are off resonance. At resonance, the spectra consist of a central peak and several sidebands peaked at the frequencies ω = ω a ± m(ω a - ω b ), corresponding to the multi-frequency mixing of both laser fields where m is a positive integer. Sidebands also appear at fractional multiples of frequencies and are due to contributions arising from energy shifts induced by the laser fields. The computed spectra at resonance are discussed and compared with the observed ones. The off-resonance spectra are computed for a wide range of values of Rabi frequencies and detunings, and are presented graphically. It is found that in the off-resonance case, mixing of a larger number of light frequencies occurs from that in the resonance case. The intensity of the peaks in the off-resonance case are immensely enhanced in comparison with those at resonance. The enhancement of the intensities is in agreement with the observed ones and its occurrence is theoretically explained. It is shown that if the detunings are properly chosen then the desired peak describing the required mixing of frequencies of the laser fields can be immensely enhanced. The method may be useful to investigate multi-frequency resonances of the rotation or rotation-vibration spectra of excited states or excited states near their ionization continua.
