Novel Aspects of Evolution of the Stokes Parameters for an Electromagnetic Wave in Anisotropic Media

Robert S. Botet, Hiroshi Kuratsuji, Ryohei Seto

Polarization of a plane electromagnetic wave travelling through a medium is studied in the slowly-varying field envelope approximation. It is shown that the problem is identical to the 4-momentum evolution of a negatively-charged massless relativistic particle in an electromagnetic field. The approach is exemplified by the resonant oscillations of circular polarization in a medium embedded in a static magnetic field and a modulated electric field. The effect of dissipation in the medium is discussed. It is shown that the Rabi oscillations are stable below a threshold depending on the absorption coefficient. Above it, oscillations disappear.

Exact solutions of the equation for composite scalar particles in quantized electromagnetic waves

Sergey Il'ich Kruglov

An equation is considered for a composite scalar particle with polarizabilities in an external quantized electromagnetic plane wave. This equation is reduced to a system of equations for an infinite number of interacting oscillators. After diagonalization, we come to equations for free oscillators. As a result, exact solutions of the equation for a particle are found in a plane-quantized electromagnetic wave of arbitrary polarization. As a particular case, the solution for monochromatic electromagnetic waves is considered. The relativistic coherent states of a particle are constructed using the Poisson distribution of photon numbers. In the limit, when the average photon number [Formula: see text] and the volume V of the quantization tend to infinity (but the photon density [Formula: see text] /V remains constant), the wave function converts to the solution corresponding to the external classical electromagnetic wave. A new class of degenerate solutions to the massless Dirac equation and their potential applications in optical memories

Georgios N. Tsigaridas, Aristides I. Kechriniotis, Christos A. Tsonos +1 more

In this article, we present a novel class of degenerate solutions to the massless Dirac equation, corresponding to a wide variety of electromagnetic 4-potentials and fields, including both zero field and circularly polarized electromagnetic waves. An interesting property of these solutions is that the spin of the particles rotates in synchronization with the electric and magnetic fields of the electromagnetic waves. These results could be utilized for the development of optical memories based on materials supporting massless Dirac fermions, such as graphene.
