Abstract

In this article, we present a novel class of degenerate solutions to the massless Dirac equation, corresponding to a wide variety of electromagnetic 4-potentials and fields, including both zero field and circularly polarized electromagnetic waves. An interesting property of these solutions is that the spin of the particles rotates in synchronization with the electric and magnetic fields of the electromagnetic waves. These results could be utilized for the development of optical memories based on materials supporting massless Dirac fermions, such as graphene.

Degenerate solutions to the Dirac equation for massive particles and their applications in quantum tunneling

Abstract In a recent work we have proven the existence of degenerate solutions to the Dirac equation, corresponding to an infinite number of different electromagnetic fields, providing also some examples regarding massless particles. In the present article our results are extended significantly, providing degenerate solutions to the Dirac equation for particles with arbitrary mass, which, under certain conditions, could be interpreted as pairs of particles (or antiparticles) moving in a potential barrier with energy equal to the height of the barrier and spin opposite to each other. We calculate the electromagnetic fields corresponding to these solutions, providing also some examples regarding both spatially constant electromagnetic fields and electromagnetic waves. Further, we discuss some potential applications of our work, mainly regarding the control of the particles outside the potential barrier, without affecting their state inside the barrier. Finally, we study the effect of small perturbations to the degenerate solutions, showing that our results are still valid, in an approximate sense, provided that the amplitude of the electromagnetic fields corresponding to the exact degenerate solutions is sufficiently small.

Magnetic moment of relativistic fermions

Boris V. Gisin

In the paper a new class of exact localized solutions of Dirac's equation in the field of a circularly polarized electromagnetic wave and a constant magnetic field is presented. These solutions possess unusual properties and are applicable only to relativistic fermions. The problem of the magnetic resonance is considered in the framework of the classical theory of fields. It is shown that interpretation of the magnetic resonance for relativistic fermions must be changed. Numerical examples of parameters of the electromagnetic wave, constant magnetic field and the localization length scale for real measurements are presented.

Quantum states in rotating electromagnetic fields

Boris V. Gisin

We describe a new class of exact square integrable solutions of the Pauli and Dirac equation in rotating electromagnetic fields. Solutions obtained by putting equations in the stationary form with help of a coordinate transformation corresponding to the transition into a rotating frame. The transformation is assumed to be Galilean one however a non-Galilean transformation is of particular interest for such solutions. Obtained solutions, especially of Dirac's equation, are valid for arbitrary values of parameters and may be tested experimentally.

Massless Dirac fermions in an electromagnetic field

Ahmed Jellal, Abderrahim El Mouhafid, Mohammed Daoud A

We study the relations between massless Dirac fermions in an electromagnetic field and atoms in quantum optics. After getting the solutions for the energy spectrum, we show that it is possible to reproduce the 2D Dirac Hamiltonian, with all its quantum relativistic effects, in a controllable system such as a single trapped ion, through the Jaynes–Cummings and anti-Jaynes–Cummings models. Also we show that under certain conditions, the evolution of the Dirac Hamiltonian provides us with Rashba spin–orbit and linear Dresselhaus couplings. Considering the multimode multiphoton Jaynes–Cummings model interacting with N modes of an electromagnetic field prepared in general pure quantum states, we analyze the Rabi oscillation. Evaluating the time evolution of the Dirac position operator, we determine the Zitterbewegung frequency and the corresponding oscillating term as a function of the electromagnetic field.

The second internal degree of freedom of the Dirac particle and its optical-mechanical analogy

Nikolay Leonidovich Chuprikov

Dirac's equation with static external fields is considered as an equation of relativistic quantum theory, which describes the quantum dynamics of an electron in four-dimensional space-time. It is shown that the Dirac electron has only one intrinsic degree of freedom -- spin. The quantum ensemble of an electron with a given energy consists of two inseparable from each other subensembles of heavy and light spin-1/2 quasiparticles to have opposite (relative) intrinsic parities. In the case of electrical scalar potential nonuniform in the direction of a particle motion, these subensembles behave as analogs of the electrical and magnetic components of the plane monochromatic electromagnetic wave propagating in a dispersive medium, nonuniform in the direction of a wave motion. The role of states with negative energies and the properties of the velocity operator are explained.
