The Equivalence of Schrödinger and Heisenberg Pictures in Quantum Cellular Automata

Asif Shakeel

Quantum cellular automata (QCA) are discrete models of space and time homogeneous quantum field theories (QFTs) and regarded as natural candidates for quantum simulation. Description of a QCA over the separable Hilbert space of finite, unbounded configurations (UFC Hilbert space) with unitary state evolution is the {\it Schrödinger template}, and over the incomplete infinite tensor product algebra (ITPA) with evolution by algebra automorphism is the {\it Heisenberg template}. Whether every Heisenberg template admits an equivalent Schrödinger template is a foundational question, and one that has persisted as an open problem. In the present paper we prove that for every Heisenberg template an equivalent Schrödinger template exists. We frame the question from a representation theory standpoint, using constructs and results from the representation theory of finite and countably infinite dimensional vector spaces and from category theory to answer it. With the previously known existence of a Heisenberg template for every Schrödinger template, our result establishes the equivalence of the templates.

Functional Formulation of Quantum Theory of a Scalar Field in a Metric with Lorentzian and Euclidean Signatures

Zbigniew Haba

We study the Schrödinger equation in quantum field theory (QFT) in its functional formulation. In this approach, quantum correlation functions can be expressed as classical expectation values over (complex) stochastic processes. We obtain a stochastic representation of the Schrödinger time evolution on Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) states by means of the Wiener integral. We discuss QFT in a flat expanding metric and in de Sitter space-time. We calculate the evolution kernel in an expanding flat metric in the real-time formulation. We discuss a field interaction in pseudoRiemannian and Riemannian metrics showing that an inversion of the signature leads to some substantial simplifications of the singularity problems in QFT.

The Heisenberg versus the Schrodinger picture in quantum field theory

Dan Solomon

The Heisenberg picture and Schrodinger picture are supposed to be equivalent representations of quantum mechanics. However this idea has been challenged by P.A.M. Dirac. Also, it has been recently shown by A. J. Faria et al that this is not necessarily the case. In this article a simple problem will be worked out in quantum field theory in which the Heisenberg picture and Schrodinger picture give different results.
