All-optical image processing with cavity type II second-harmonic generation

Abstract

The possibilities offered by type II intracavity second-harmonic generation for all-optical parallel processing of images are investigated. By injecting an image in a linearly polarized pump beam and a homogeneous field with orthogonal polarization, we obtain, according to the value of the latter, either frequency and polarization transfer or contrast enhancement and contour recognition. Noise-filtering effects are also predicted.

Image processing with cavity type-II Second Harmonic Generation

Pierre Scotto, Pere Colet, Maxi San Miguel

Nonlinear optical effects may provide a way to perform all-optical parallel processing of images. Here, we investigate the possibilities offered by Type II intracavity second harmonic generation. We show that injecting an image in one polarization and a homogeneous field in the other, we obtain, according to the value of the latter, either the frequency and polarization transfer of the image or the possibility to enhance its contrast.

This study discusses optical image and data processing with type-II intracavity second harmonic generation. This work explores both the case of injecting a homogeneous field and an image and the case of injecting two images simultaneously.

All-optical coherent processing via cascading of second-order nonlinearities

Gaetano Assanto, Irina Torelli, S. Trillo +1 more

Based on cascading of second-order nonlinearities we propose novel schemes for all-optical signal processing exploiting the tensorial nature of the susceptibility. Waves of the same frequency and orthogonal polarizations can interact via the generated second-harmonic, with an indirect energy transfer and the consequent possibility of gain and transistor action, polarization switching, amplitude and phase modulation.

Spatial behavior of light in second-harmonic generation

Pierre Scotto, Maxi San Miguel

We investigate the spatial behavior of nonclassical light produced by type I second-harmonic generation in the traveling-wave configuration. An input-output transformation for the system of fundamental and second-harmonic field is derived in the framework of a linearization approach and used to investigate the properties of an optical system, which consists of a crystal with a quadratic nonlinearity pumped at frequency $\ensuremath{\omega}$ and enclosed in a two-lens telescopic system. If a faint input image at frequency $2\ensuremath{\omega}$ is injected into this device, for a sufficiently large interaction length, the output displays a pair of symmetric amplified versions of the input image at both fundamental and second-harmonic frequency. The analysis of the quantum fluctuations in the output images shows that under certain conditions, this optical device operates noiselessly with respect to the output at frequency $\ensuremath{\omega},$ whereas the output images at frequency $2\ensuremath{\omega}$ are affected by a slight degradation of the signal-to-noise ratio.

Intracavity second harmonic generation in a Fabry-Perot resonator: I. Polarization effects

L. Friob, Paul Mandel, Evgeny A. Viktorov

We study the polarization of the electric field in Fabry-Perot resonators which contain at least two optically birefringent elements. One of them is a frequency-doubling crystal, the other being either a passive and/or an active crystal. Using the Jones matrix technique, we review the polarization properties of the linear Fabry-Perot cavity and extend these results to V-shaped cavities. For these configurations, we derive the rate of conversion of the fundamental frequencies into the second harmonic and the sum frequencies. These conversion rates are interpreted as intensity-dependent losses for the rate equations of the fundamental modes which are derived.
