Abstract

The instability thresholds were found for almost opposite waves whose interference pattern could not be recorded by a medium utilizing a transient optical nonlinearity of the local type. Pairs of waves with an angular shift relative to the direction opposite to the pump radiation were generated.

Conditions for generation of a phase-conjugate wave in a ring resonator with a local transient nonlinear response of the medium

Yu A Arutyunov, A I Khizhnyak

An approximation of a constant intensity of two counterpropagating noncollinear waves in a ring system is used to consider phase conjugation as a result of a four-beam interaction in a medium with a transient nonlinear response. An analytic solution is obtained of a system of equations for weak waves consisting of an arbitrary set of quasiplane components. It is shown that when the absolute instability threshold is exceeded by a nonlinear phase shift, the maximum increment is exhibited by those components which are inclined at a certain angle to the phase-conjugate wave. The conditions for reliable phase conjugation by introduction of a phase screen into the ring are identified.

Threshold conditions for generation in a photorefractive crystal with counterpropagating mutually incoherent pump beams

Mikhail V. Vasnetsov, A. V. Il'Enkov, S. G. Odulov +1 more

The threshold conditions for generation are found for media with a nonlinear response of a mixed type. The possibility of cavity-free generation in a photorefractive crystal with a purely local initial response, by virtue of a shift of the generation frequency away from the pump frequency, is analyzed. The frequency shift and the wave-vector mismatch are derived as a function of the interaction constant.

Transverse instability threshold in counterpropagating light beams for a nonlinear medium with local photorefractive response

Boris I. Sturman, Alexander I. Chernykh

We derive the threshold conditions for the instability of counterpropagating waves in a nonlinear medium with local photorefractive response against the excitation of transverse small-angle structures. These conditions allow for all the important types of diffraction from refractive-index reflection gratings and are not limited to the case of strict frequency degeneracy of the waves. We study the dependence of the crystal-thickness threshold and the secondary wave emission angle on the crystal parameters and the pump conditions. We show that when the pump wave intensities differ considerably, excitation of standing light structures is replaced by excitation of traveling structures. Finally, we discuss the applications of the theory to experiments with the photorefractive crystals LiNbO 3 and LiTaO 3 .

Generation in the double-conjugation scheme for a medium with a local transient response

It is shown that the minimum threshold in the double-conjugation scheme for a medium with a local transient response takes place for the generated waves with angular tilting.

Self-diffraction and stimulated Brillouin scattering of opposite light waves in absorbing media

O. P. Zaskal'Ko, A. A. Zozulya, N. N. Panaioti +1 more

A study was made of the characteristics of self-diffraction of opposite optical waves in the case of a thermal mechanism of grating formation. The main factor limiting the self-diffraction efficiency was found to be a low-threshold absolute instability of the optical wave due to stimulated Brillouin scattering. The conditions were found under which the radiation generated by stimulated Brillouin scattering had a high spatial and temporal coherence.

Polarization instabilities in an isotropic nonlinear Kerr medium

Alexander L. Gaeta, Robert W. Boyd

The steady-state polarizations of fields counterpropagating in nonlinear Kerr media can exhibit complicated behavior.1 We examine the temporal behavior for the case of an isotropic nonlinear Kerr medium and show that the polarizations are temporally unstable above a certain threshold intensity, even when the input polarizations are linear and parallel to each other. This polarization configuration is known to be spatially stable and is often chosen for the two strong pump waves in phase conjugation by degenerate four-wave mixing. We find that the threshold intensity for the polarization instability is approximately the intensity at which the phase conjugate reflectivity is equal to unity. Depending on the ratio of the two input intensities, this instability just above threshold can manifest itself as an abrupt rotation of the output polarizations to a new steady-state value or as a periodic oscillation of the output polarizations. At higher intensities the polarization can evolve chaotically in time, and depending on the ratio of the transit time through the medium to the response time of the medium the output intensity can fluctuate chaotically as well.
