Abstract

In this paper we introduce puncturing techniques to produce high-rate π-rotation low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. The techniques rely on symmetry considerations to maintain simple description and to achieve excellent performance. We also extend the bounds on the minimum d2for the high-rate codes.

Results on Punctured Low-Density Parity-Check Codes and Improved Iterative Decoding Techniques

Hossein Pishro-Nik, Faramarz Fekri

This paper first introduces an improved decoding algorithm for low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes over binary-input-output-symmetric memoryless channels. Then some fundamental properties of punctured LDPC codes are presented. It is proved that for any ensemble of LDPC codes, there exists a puncturing threshold. It is then proved that for any rates R1and R2satisfying 0121to R2resulting in asymptotically good codes for all rates R1lesRlesR2. Specifically, this implies that rates arbitrarily close to one are achievable via puncturing. Bounds on the performance of punctured LDPC codes are also presented. It is also shown that punctured LDPC codes are as good as ordinary LDPC codes. For BEC and arbitrary positive numbers R121lesRlesR2is shown. Based on the above observations, a method is proposed to design good punctured LDPC codes over a broad range of rates. Finally, it is shown that the results of this paper may be used for the proof of the existence of the capacity-achieving LDPC codes over binary-input-output-symmetric memoryless channels

Rate-Compatible Puncturing of Finite-Length Low-Density Parity-Check Codes

Badri N. Vellambi, R. Badri, Faramarz Fekri

In this paper, we study rate-compatible puncturing of finite-length Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes. First, we derive simple and yet good bounds on the expected performance of punctured codes (constructed by random puncturing) over Binary Erasure Channel (BEC) as a function of the performance of their parent LDPC code. We then present a novel rate-compatible puncturing scheme that is very easy to implement. Our scheme uses the idea that a more uniform distribution of punctured bits across the Tanner graph results in punctured codes with better performance. Although the puncturing scheme tailored to regular codes is presented, it is also directly applicable to irregular parent ensembles. By simulations, the proposed rate-compatible puncturing scheme is shown to be superior to the existing puncturing methods for both regular and irregular LDPC codes over BEC and Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) Channel.

Design and Analysis of a Family of Complexity-Constrained LDPC Codes

Massimo Battaglioni, Matteo Amagliani, Marco Baldi +2 more

In this paper we study a special family of Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes, called Primitive Rate-Compatible (PRC) LDPC codes, obtained by applying puncturing to some properly chosen simplex codes. We investigate their minimum distance properties and give insights on the design of PRC-LDPC codes for use in scenarios where constraints on hardware and software resources require maintaining a low level of complexity. We numerically assess the error rate performance of these codes in such a setting, showing that they also demonstrate good performance under belief propagation decoding, in addition to low decoding complexity.

Design Considerations and Performance Analysis of Good ¿-Rotation LDPC Codes

Rich Echard, Shih-Chun Chang

In this paper we present two theoretical results that lead to the development of good π-rotation LDPC codes. The first theorem derives bounds on the weight of the parity vector when the weight of the information vector is two. The second theorem establishes the expected number of short-loops in the parity check matrix. We then present construction tools that are used to reduce the complexity of searching minimum distance and girth for π-rotation LDPC codes. Several performance examples are given

A novel puncturing scheme for rate-compatible low-density parity-check codes

Xiyuan Chen, Honglin Zhao, Yongkui Ma +1 more

In this paper, we present an effective puncturing scheme for rate-compatible low-density parity-check (RC-LDPC) codes. Our scheme is based on the criterion of maximum average girth which is an important performance parameter for the construction of RC-LDPC codes. We select a pattern wherein the punctured bits are far apart from each other in the Tanner graph of the codes by sorting algorithm, and then puncture the bits with the maximum average girth. In the process, there is no need to do any optimization. By simulations, the proposed codes show good performance under puncturing over a wide range of rates. The introduced puncturing criterion results in lower bit error rate and error floor when compared with random puncturing. Moreover, the performance of proposed method is similar to the direct structured LDPC codes by progressive edge growth (PEG). But the scheme is very simple to implement and lowers the complexity of encoding and decoding.

Rate-Compatible LDPC Codes Based on Primitive Polynomials and Golomb Rulers

Massimo Battaglioni, Marco Baldi, Franco Chiaraluce +1 more

We introduce and study a family of rate-compatible Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes. The design of these codes starts from simplex codes, defined by parity-check matrices having a simple form stemming from the coefficients of a primitive polynomial. For this reason, we call the new codes Primitive Rate-Compatible LDPC (PRC-LDPC) codes. By applying puncturing to these codes, we obtain a bit-level granularity of the code rate. We show that, in order to achieve good LDPC codes, the underlying polynomials, besides being primitive, must meet some more stringent conditions with respect to those of classical punctured simplex codes. We leverage non-modular Golomb rulers to take these new requirements into account. We characterize the minimum distance properties of PRC-LDPC codes, and study and discuss their encoding and decoding complexity. Finally, we assess the error rate performance of high rate PRC-LDPC codes under iterative decoding.
