A single-photon source for quantum networking

Cavity quantum electrodynamics (cavity QED) with single atoms and single photons provides a promising route toward scalable quantum information processing (QIP) and computing. A strongly coupled atom-cavity system should act as a universal quantum interface, allowing the generation and storage of quantum information. This thesis describes the realisation of an atom-cavity system used for the production and manipulation of single photons. These photons are shown to exhibit strong sub-Poissonian statistics and indistinguishability, both prerequisites for their use in realistic quantum systems. Further, the ability to control the temporal shape and internal phase of the photons, as they are generated in the cavity, is demonstrated. This high degree of control presents a novel mechanism enabling the creation of arbitrary photonic quantum bits.

Electromagnetic control and improvement of nonclassicality in a strongly coupled single-atom cavity-QED system

Yufeng Han, Chengjie Zhu, Xiangyong Huang +1 more

We present a proposal to control and improve the nonclassicality of photons in a single-atom cavity-QED system with a strong coupling strength, where the atom is directly driven by external fields. Exploring the eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenstates of the system, we show that the dressed states can be optically manipulated by changing the control field intensity. In particular, tuning the control field frequency to be resonant with the one-photon excitation state, we show that the nonclassicality of cavity photons arising from the two-photon blockade can be actively controlled. We also show that there exists a magic control field Rabi frequency at which the two-photon blockade phenomenon can be significantly improved. The work presented here provides an optical method to control the statistical features of the cavity field that could find utility in nonclassical light generation, photon gateway operation, and exotic quantum-state generation.

Controlled rapid generation of single photons in an atom-cavity quantum composite

Kyungwon An

In this talk, the authors report realization of high-speed single photon generation on demand in a quantum composite of a single85Rb atom and a Fabry-Perot cavity mode. The key idea in our experiment is to optimize system parameters for high efficiency and repetition rate of single photon generation. For this, we employed cavity parameters for a moderate coupling regime instead of the strong coupling regime with the atom-cavity coupling, cavity decay rate and atom decay rate given as (g, K, γ)/2π = (7, 19, 3) MHz (all half widths), respectively. As a result, we could generate single photons with a high efficiency of 17% at a fast repetition rate up to 10 MHz. A figure of merit, defined as the product of the efficiency and the repetition rate, is 30 times higher than those of any previous experiments in the cavity-QED system.
