Amplification of gamma radiation without inversion in the scheme with bichromatic radio-frequency field

Abstract

The possible variants of amplification of gamma radiation without inversion is analyzed for the six level model nuclear system Ig equals 3/2 and Ie equals 1/2 which can be influenced by the bichromatic radiofrequency (RF) field. The variant of amplification without inversion has been found with no bichromatic radiofrequency (RF) field. If it is still necessary then the amplitudes of the particular monochromatic components should be no equal.

Self-amplified spontaneous gamma-ray emission

Задерновский Анатолий Андреевич

We discuss a possibility for obtaining the self-amplified spontaneous emission of gamma radiation in an active medium with hidden population inversion of nuclear states. Hidden inversion appears in cooled nuclear ensembles due to assistance of the nuclear recoil in emission and absorption of gamma quanta. Establishing a hidden inversion allows an amplification of gamma radiation to occur in a particular frequency range without excess of the number of excited nuclei over the number of unexcited nuclei. We formulate a set of requirements to the pumping radiation and to the amplifying nuclear medium crucial to the development of gamma-ray lasing.

Inversionless amplification of a monochromatic field in a nonresonant three-level ∧ medium

龚尚庆, 徐至展

A three-level medium is the simplest and most suitable model for understanding the physical mechanisras of amplification without inversion (AWI). Various analyses were presented for all possible resonant three-level configurations. Recently, P. Mandel et al. have studied the AWI in three-level ∧ model for general nonresonant case and obtained the condition for establishing AWl. In our note the inversionless amplification of a monochromatic field in a nonresonant three-level ∧ medium will be investigated.

Amplification without inversion: The double-Λ scheme

Olga A. Kocharovskaya, Paul Mandel

We study the propagation of a bichromatic field in three-level and four-level media. In the case of a three-level medium, we consider the \ensuremath{\Lambda} configuration and demonstrate that if the upper level is not empty there is a critical value for the low-frequency coherence such that below this threshold and for intense fields, coherent bleaching occurs. This implies a sharp reduction of the field absorption and the fluorescence emission whereas above this threshold a parametric instability takes place. It corresponds to an amplification of the field that does not need a population inversion between the optical transitions. Finally we prove that the field alone cannot create a low-frequency coherence exceeding this threshold. Therefore we analyze the double-\ensuremath{\Lambda} configuration involving a four-level medium in which the upper and lower pairs of atomic levels have a low-frequency separation while optical transitions take place between the two pairs of states. An intense bichromatic field that is resonant with one upper state and the lower levels and a weak bichromatic field resonant with the other upper state and the same two lower states are sent into the medium. We analyze the limit in which the low-frequency coherence created between the lower pair of states has a relaxation time which is large. Then there will be population trapping in the lower states leading to coherent bleaching if there is no inversion between the upper levels but there will be amplification if there is inversion between the upper levels. In this way amplification at the optical transitions without population inversion between these states is realized.

Nuclear coherence and inversionless gain at gamma-ray transition

Roman L. Kolesov, Yuri V. Rostovtsev, Olga A. Kocharovskaya

A possibility of amplification without population inversion at gamma-ray transition due to excitation of nuclear coherence via coherent optical driving of the electron coupled with nucleus is demonstrated. Hyperfine splitting and isomer shift allow us to get inversionless amplification at gamma-ray transition via nuclear coherence created by the optical driving field.
