Optical 𝒫𝒯-symmetry and 𝒫𝒯-antisymmetry in coherently driven atomic lattices

Xin Wang, Jin-Hui Wu

We study an ensemble of ultracold atoms trapped in the one-dimensional optical lattices under the N level configuration to examine the absorption and dispersion properties modulated into different ways along the lattice direction z. We find these trapped atoms with a Gaussian density distribution in each period may exhibit either symmetry χp(z)=χp*(-z) or antisymmetry χp(z)=-χp*(-z) of parity-time (PT) in terms of the probe susceptibility. Such intriguing twofold modulations of real (χ'p) and imaginary (χ″p) susceptibilities with a π/2 phase shift are attained by spatially modulating intensities or frequencies of one driving field in a suitable way. The PT-symmetric or PT-antisymmetric atomic lattices correspond in fact to complex photonic crystals and may be extended to develop functional devices like photonic diodes and transistors, a task impossible for real photonic crystals.

Optical manipulation and conversion in whispering gallery mode resonators with pump depletion

Liu Guo, Cong-Hua Yan

Abstract In this work, we study optical manipulation and conversion in the high-power regime, and thus the unavoidable intrinsic coupling between the pump light and the signal light, i.e. pump depletion, needs to be included. Compared with the transmission properties that are insensitive to the power of the signal light in the low-power regime with pump non-depletion, our results in the high-power regime with pump depletion show that the resonant transmission coefficients of the χ ( 2 ) nonlinearity can be manipulated from 0 to non-zero by adjusting the intensities of the signal light, and thus it behaves as an intensity-dependent all-optical switch. Although the resonant conversion efficiencies from four-wave mixing of the χ ( 3 ) nonlinearity are generally suppressed by power-dependent frequency shifts as a result of self-phase modulation (SPM) and cross-phase modulation (XPM) in the high-pump regime, the conversion efficiencies can be amplified by tuning the frequency detuning of the signal and pump lights. The optical transmission coefficients and conversion efficiencies can also be enhanced by utilizing the interplay between χ ( 2 ) and χ ( 3 ) nonlinearities in the high-pump regime. The mechanism of enhancing the conversion efficiencies to overcome the suppression from SPM and XPM provides a new way to convert frequency with high efficiencies.

Nonlinear Talbot effect in electromagnetically induced optical lattice

Ruibo Ru, Huangjie Li, Sannv Zhang +6 more

The nonlinear Talbot effect means formation of self-imaging of the periodic structure by utilizing the harmonic wave instead of the fundamental one. Electromagnetically induced optical lattices established in atomic ensembles by optical induction technique have received great attention in recent years. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the nonlinear four wave mixing (FWM) Talbot effect in the Rubidium medium, where the third-order susceptibility χ(3) has periodic distribution due to the modulation from the incident pump light. Two kinds of periodic structure, the square lattice and hexagonal lattice, are employed to investigate the nonlinear FWM Talbot effect. The integer and fractional Talbot images produced by the FWM field are all obtained. The experimental results are qualitatively consistent with theoretical simulations. Different from the self-imaging of the refractive index in the linear optics, the FWM Talbot effect is the self-imaging of the periodic χ(3). The results may offer a high-resolution lensless way for imaging various optical periodic structures.
