Abstract

By using of the invariant theory, we study a two energy-level Bose–Einstein condensate interacting with a time-dependent laser field, the dynamical and geometric phases are given respectively. The Aharonov–Anandan phase is also obtained under the cyclical evolution.

By using the invariant theory, we study the phases of two-component Bose–Einstein condensates with a coupling drive under the case that the strength of the interatomic interaction in each condensate equals the interspecies interaction. The dynamical and geometric phases are presented respectively. The Aharonov–Anandan phase is also obtained under the cyclical evolution.

Geometric Phase in a Bose-Einstein Josephson Junction

Radha Balakrishnan, Mitaxi Mehta

We calculate the geometric phase associated with the time evolution of the wave function of a Bose-Einstein condensate system in a double-well trap by using a model for tunneling between the wells. For a cyclic evolution, this phase is shown to be half the solid angle subtended by the evolution of a unit vector whose z component and azimuthal angle are given by the population difference and phase difference between the two condensates. For a non-cyclic evolution an additional phase term arises. We show that the geometric phase can also be obtained by mapping the tunneling equations onto the equations os a space curve. The importance of a geometric phase in the context of some recent experiments is pointed out.

Dynamics and Berry phase of two-species Bose-Einstein condensates

In terms of exact solutions of the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation for an effective giant spin modeled from a coupled two-mode Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with adiabatic and cyclic time-varying Raman coupling between two hyperfine states of the BEC, we obtain analytic time-evolution formulas of the population imbalance and relative phase between two components with various initial states, especially the SU(2) coherent state. We find the Berry phase depending on the number parity of atoms, and particle number dependence of the collapse revival of population-imbalance oscillation. It is shown that self-trapping and phase locking can be achieved from initial SU(2) coherent states with proper parameters.
