Microwave control of optical bistability and multistability in the presence of antirotating wave coupling

Xiaoqi Li, Jian Wang, Wang Fei +2 more

We show the control of optical bistability and multistability via the atomic coherence induced by the microwave field in the presence of the antirotating wave coupling. Appearance or disappearance of bistability and multistability, manipulation of the hysteresis hoop widths and the threshold intensity are achieved by changing the initial phase of the microwave field. Physically, the rotating wave and antirotating wave couplings can be treated as the equivalent bichromatic excitation. Each of the coupled levels are split into an infinite set of sublevels. As a consequence, each of the bare state transitions is split into an infinite set of transitions of different frequencies. The coherent superposition of these split transitions, which depends on the initial phase of the microwave field, determines the nonlinear absorption and dispersion of the medium.

Enhanced optical bistability in slotted photonic crystal structure for microwave frequency generation

Akash Kumar Pradhan, Chandra Prakash, Sambit Satpathy +1 more

This study proposes a novel silicon nanocrystal SiNC/SiO[Formula: see text] embedded slotted photonic crystal nanocavity employing precise width modulation to explore optical bistability and self-pulsing behavior for microwave signal generation. The designed cavity achieves an ultra-high quality factor (Q) of [Formula: see text] and a low modal volume of [Formula: see text]. Theoretical modeling incorporating Kerr nonlinearity, two-photon absorption, and free carrier effects is used to analyze the bistability response. Simulation results reveal a low threshold power of [Formula: see text] for optical bistability under a - 20 pm detuning condition. Additionally, the cavity demonstrates microwave frequency generation through self-pulsing oscillations, with a fundamental mode and observable second harmonic at 21.34 GHz. Fabrication tolerance is also evaluated, showing that the design sustains performance with up to 9% randomness in hole radii, 12% in x-position, and 20% in z-position of air holes. These findings confirm the feasibility of the proposed structure for low-power, high-frequency integrated photonic applications.

Absorptive Optical Bistability at Microwave Frequencies

Lorenzo Longo

The behaviour of a F P resonator filled with a nonlinear medium and irradiated by a strong e.m. field nearly resonant with bo th one cavi ty mode and with the medium is bistable (optics1 bistability), the main characteristic feature being tha t the outgoing power can have two distinct values for a proper choice of the parameters defining the state of the entire system. I n view of the interest both from a fundamenta l point of view and from the potent ial applications r the field of integrated optics of bistable devices, a very intensive effort has been made to s tudy the various aspects of OB (1).
