Abstract

The effect of electromagnetically induced transparency in crystals of magnetic molecules was theoretically investigated. The problem of choosing the polarizations of strong and weak resonant magnetic fields acting on a crystal is discussed. Estimates of the amplitude of strong resonant field that is necessary for manifestation of this effect in crystals of magnetic molecules Mn 12 and Fe 8 are reported.

Theoretical investigation of electromagnetically induced transparency in a crystal of molecular magnets

Alexey V. Shvetsov, G. A. Vugalter, A. I. Grebeneva

The elimination of the absorption of a weak electromagnetic wave in a three-level atomic system in the presence of a strong resonant electromagnetic wave is well known in optics. This effect is termed electromagnetically induced transparency. We have theoretically investigated this effect in a crystal of molecular magnets. The crystal is subject to two (weak and strong) resonant magnetic fields. We discuss the choice of polarization of the magnetic fields. The influence of the distribution of the longitudinal anisotropy constant and the Land\'e factor on the manifestation of electromagnetically induced transparency has been studied. The amplitude of the strong field required for observation of the effect has been estimated.

On the polarization rotation by means of electromagnetically induced transparency

Решетов Владимир Александрович

Abstract The limitations on the effect of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) imposed by the degeneracy of atomic levels are considered. The dependence of the EIT-induced polarization rotation of the weak probe field on the characteristics of the resonant transitions and that of the control field is studied. The conditions for the 90 ∘ -rotation without absorption are discussed.

Effects of vector magnetic field on electromagnetically induced transparency with lin ⊥ lin polarization

Bankim Chandra Das, Arpita Das, Dipankar Bhattacharyya +1 more

The effect of a vector magnetic field was studied on electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) with linear ⊥ linear polarization of the probe and pump beams in 87 R b − D 2 transition with a vapor cell at room temperature. The dependence of EIT on the direction of the quantization axis and the relative orientation of the polarizations of the applied electric fields was studied experimentally. We show that from the relative strengths of σ and π EITs, the direction of the magnetic field can be found. Moreover, from the relative separation between σ and π EITs, the strength of the magnetic field can be calculated. We also demonstrate that the EIT peak amplitudes show oscillatory behavior depending upon the orientation of the laser polarization relative to the magnetic field direction. To understand the experimental observations, a theoretical study was done numerically considering all 13 Zeeman sub-levels. Apart from the numerical simulation, a toy model was also constructed to obtain an analytical response of the medium considering the velocity distribution. The dependencies of the magnetic field direction and polarization direction of the electric field were explicitly derived with the analytical model.

Electromagnetic superradiance from single-molecule magnets in the presence of a classical driving magnetic field

Iosif Davidovich Tokman, Vera Il’inichna Pozdnyakova, G. A. Vugalter +1 more

The electromagnetic superradiance of a nanomagnet crystal (magnetic molecules) subjected to a resonant driving magnetic field and a dc magnetic field has been theoretically investigated. The driving magnetic field is supposed to be strong enough so that it essentially influences the spectrum of the magnetic molecules. The conditions favorable for observing the superradiance have been formulated.

Electromagnetically induced transparency versus nonlinear Faraday effect: Coherent control of light-beam polarization

Rafael Drampyan, Szymon Pustelny, Wojciech Gawlik

We report on experimental and theoretical study of the nonlinear Faraday effect under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency at the $5{S}_{1/2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}5{P}_{3/2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}5{D}_{5/2}$ two-photon transition in rubidium vapor. These transitions realize the inverted $Y$ model which combines the $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ and ladder systems. Strong nonlinearity allowing for large rotation angles of a probe beam tuned to the $S\ensuremath{\rightarrow}P$ transition was obtained by creation of quantum superpositions of magnetic sublevels (Zeeman coherences) in the rubidium ground state ($\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ scheme). Additionally, electromagnetically induced transparency was accomplished in a ladder scheme by acting with a second strong coupling laser on the $P\ensuremath{\rightarrow}D$ transition. Under conditions of a two-photon resonance the rotation was significantly reduced, which is interpreted as a competition between the coherent processes. The effect was observed in sub-Gauss magnetic fields and could be used for efficient coherent control of generation of the ground-state coherences, e.g., for controlling the polarization state of the probe light.
