Abstract

We show that an all-optical analogue to the Dicke superradiance effect can be observed in on-chip photonic crystal resonator systems where two resonators are separated by a distance much longer than the wavelength of the optical resonators' resonance. In addition, we provide the experimental observation of structural tuning of the superradiance effect in micron-sized optical resonators in a silicon photonic crystal slab.

Experimental Realization of an On-Chip All-Optical Analogue to Electromagnetically Induced Transparency

Qianfan Xu, Sunil Sandhu, Michelle L. Povinelli +3 more

We provide the first experimental observation of structure tuning of the electromagnetically induced transparency-like spectrum in integrated on-chip optical resonator systems. The system consists of coupled silicon ring resonators with 10 microm diameter on silicon, where the coherent interference between the two coupled resonators is tuned. We measured a transparency-resonance mode with a quality factor of 11,800.

Coupled Resonances in Multiple Silicon Photonic Crystal Cavities in All-Optical Solid-State Analogy to Electromagnetically Induced Transparency

Xiaodong Yang, Mingbin Yu, Dim‐Lee Kwong +1 more

We present experimental and theoretical studies of coupled resonances in multiple silicon photonic crystal cavities in an all-optical classical analogy to electromagnetically induced transparency. Multiple implementation schemes are demonstrated, such as two (in various configurations), and four cavities. The photonic crystal cavities are embedded in 2-D photonic crystal slabs and designed in the overcoupled regime. Our observations include measured transparency resonance lifetimes more than three times the single-cavity lifetimes, Fano-like lineshapes, and stepwise resonance control through multiple aligned external optical pump beams. All observed schemes are analyzed rigorously through finite-difference time-domain simulations and the coupled-mode formalism. Our experimental and theoretical results are applicable to optical pulse trapping and all-optical dynamical storage of light in the solid state.

Tuning the coherent interaction in an on-chip photonic-crystal waveguide-resonator system

Jin-Fang Pan, Yijie Huo, Sunil Sandhu +5 more

We experimentally demonstrated that the characteristics of the coherent interaction between two waveguide-coupled resonators can be drastically tuned by changing the propagation phase in the waveguide. In particular, the transmission line shape can be tuned between an electromagnetically induced transparency like optical resonance and a flat-top reflection filter.

Integrated chip-scale electrodes allow isolated control of resonances and phases in optical multi-cavity system. By varying the round trip length, destructive and constructive intra-cavity interferences are observed, representing all-optical analogue to electromagnetically-induced-transparency and superradiance on-chip.
