Abstract

We present experimental and theoretical studies of coupled resonances in multiple silicon photonic crystal cavities in an all-optical classical analogy to electromagnetically induced transparency. Multiple implementation schemes are demonstrated, such as two (in various configurations), and four cavities. The photonic crystal cavities are embedded in 2-D photonic crystal slabs and designed in the overcoupled regime. Our observations include measured transparency resonance lifetimes more than three times the single-cavity lifetimes, Fano-like lineshapes, and stepwise resonance control through multiple aligned external optical pump beams. All observed schemes are analyzed rigorously through finite-difference time-domain simulations and the coupled-mode formalism. Our experimental and theoretical results are applicable to optical pulse trapping and all-optical dynamical storage of light in the solid state.

All-Optical Analog to Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in Multiple Coupled Photonic Crystal Cavities

Xiaodong Yang, Mingbin Yu, Dim‐Lee Kwong +1 more

We report first observations of deterministic phase- and resonance-controlled all-optical electromagnetically induced transparency in multiple coupled photonic crystal cavities. The full-range tuning of coherently coupled cavity-cavity phase and resonances allow observations of transparency resonance in dark states with lifetimes longer than incoherently summed individual cavities. Supported by theoretical analyses, our multipump beam approach allows arbitrary control in two and three coupled cavities, while the standing-wave wavelength-scale photon localization allows direct scalability for chip-scale optical pulse trapping and coupled-cavity QED.

Deterministic control of all-optical analogue to electromagnetically induced transparency in coherently-coupled silicon photonic crystal cavities

Xiaodong Yang, Mingbin Yu, Dim‐Lee Kwong +1 more

Quantum coherence in atomic systems has led to fascinating outcomes, such as laser cooling and trapping, Bose-Einstein condensates, and electromagnetically-induced-transparency (EIT). In EIT, the sharp cancellation of medium absorption has led to phenomena such as lasing without inversion, freezing light, and dynamic storage of light in a solid-state system. Similar to atomic systems, EIT-like effects can be observed through classical and optical means. Here we report the first experimental deterministic tuning of all-optical analogue to EIT in coherently-coupled standing-wave photonic crystal cavities. Our observations include transparency-resonance lifetimes more than three times the single loaded cavity, Fano-type lineshapes, and stepwise control of the coherent cavity-cavity interference. Our system, with wavelength-scale localization and coupled to a single waveguide, is analyzed well through the coupled-mode formalism which examines the delay in both transparency- and Fano-like lineshapes. Our observations support applications towards all-optical trapping, stopping and time-reversal of light in a solid-state scalable implementation.

Observations of temporal group delays in slow-light multiple coupled photonic crystal cavities

Serdar Kocaman, Xiaoxia Yang, James F. McMillan +3 more

We demonstrate temporal group delays in coherently coupled high-Q multicavity photonic crystals, in an all-optical analog to electromagnetically induced transparency. We report deterministic control of the group delay up to 4× the single cavity lifetime in our room-temperature chip. Supported by three-dimensional numerical simulations and theoretical analyses, our multipump beam approach enables control of the multicavity resonances and intercavity phase, in both single and double transparency peaks. The standing-wave wavelength-scale photon localization allows direct scalability for chip-scale optical pulse trapping and coupled-cavity quantum electrodynamics.

All-optical analog to electromagnetic induced transparency effects based on vertical coupling photonic crystal cavities

Changyu Hu, Liam O’Faoláin

We designed and experimentally studied all-optical analog to electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) effect in vertical coupling photonic crystal cavities. By tuning the phase difference between two cavities, EIT-like phenomena for two modes at different wavelengths has been experimentally demonstrated.

Evolution of all-optical electromagnetically induced absorption and induced transparency in triple-microcavity-based one-dimensional photonic crystals

Ahmer Naweed

All-optical analogs of electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) are important for light storage, sensing, and optical communication. Here, we report results of a computational study focusing on the EIA and EIT characteristics of triple-microcavity hosting one-dimensional photonic crystals (PHCs). In contrast to previous experimental investigation of dual PHC cavities, realization EIA and EIT in the triple-cavity PHC is not restricted to reflection and transmission, respectively. In addition, the dispersive response of the triple-cavity is also distinct since EIA in the triple-cavity may lead to the generation of both sub- and superluminal light pulses. Furthermore, the dispersion of the system at either output may be reversed by altering the distribution of the coupled light among the three cavities. Finally, we discuss the experimental implementation of these features based on a single monolithic PHC and show tuning of the EIA and EIT phenomenon over a broad spectral range by using strain-tunable polymer-based PHC microcavities. Among others, these findings are advantageous for realizing ultra-narrow bandwidth optical filters, all-optical switching, temporal control of cavity quantum electrodynamics effects, and on-chip dispersion control.
