Illustration of resonances and the law of exponential decay in a simple quantum-mechanical problem

Herbert Massmann

The exact quantum-mechanical solution of a particle moving in a one-dimensional well formed by a delta barrier in front of an impenetrable well is used to illustrate the relation between scattering resonances and exponential decay from the well.

Comment on "Anomalous Spreading of Power-Law Quantum Wave Packets"

R. S. Mendes, Celia Anteneodo

A family of wave packets with power law tails are employed to analyze the long time dependence of the corresponding probability density. The densities, associated to packets for free particles in the one-dimensional space, with sufficiently long tails decay asymptotically in time following a $t^{-β}$ law (with $β<1$), slower than the usual $t^{-1}$ one, including the particular case $(ln t)^2/t$ not correctly discussed in F. Lillo and R. N. Mantegna (Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 1061 (2000)).

We present the correct way to obtain the general solution of the Schr\"odinger equation for a particle in a time-dependent linear potential following the approach used in the paper of Guedes [Phys. Rev. A 63, 034102 (2001)]. In addition, we show that, in this case, the solutions (wave packets) are described by the Airy functions.
