Forward scattering of resonance laser radiation in He

Abstract

The forward scattering of a laser beam, resonant to the 2 3 P-3 3 D He transition, is investigated. A forward scattered signal is detected for a wide range of gas pressure - 0.3–6 Torr. The peculiarities of the signal due to the broadband excitation and the fine structure of the transition are discussed and compared with theory.

Influence of plasma parameters on optical coherence in a forward scattering signal

Emilia A. Alipieva, Svetlana Karabasheva

We report magneto-optical rotation due to the interaction of atoms with a resonance laser beam. Our experiment is performed on the excited He states, 23P-33D transition, (lambda) equals 587,56nm. Two processes are responsible for the magneto-optical activity: the Zeeman coherences, induced in the absorbing level, and the optical pumping processes, each of them due to the laser beam excitation. The Zeeman coherence creates peaks with a width determined by the coherence relaxation rate, while the optical pumping creates a structure with a width in the order of the natural width of the transition. Due to the difference between the relaxation rates of the 2P and 3D He levels, the two parts of signal are well resolved and depend on the He pressure in different ways. The narrow coherence signal disappears at high He pressure, unless the amplitude of the optical pumping signal increases. The optical pumping signals saturates as He pressure increased and changes its sign. At high gas pressures, such that only the optical pumping signal exists, an increase of the He pressure leads to the narrowing of both the 'classical parabolic dependence' and the optical pumping signal.

Forward scattering (polarisation spectroscopy) of resonance radiation in partially coherent fields

Jakub Zakrzewski, T. Dohnalik

Previous theoretical treatments of polarisation spectroscopy (forward scattering) are generalised so as to include laser temporal coherence effects. It is shown that for the general case it is impossible to describe the signal obtained in terms of birefringence and dichroism. The generalisation of the concept of the polarisability tensor is given together with the approximate expression for the signal in terms of it. The simple example of the J g =0 to J e =1 transition in the forward scattering experiment is discussed in detail. Comparison is made between the signal lineshapes obtained for the phase diffusion model and the chaotic field model. The necessity of taking into account the statistical properties of the laser light in the forward scattering (polarisation spectroscopy) experiment is pointed out.

Transverse intensity distribution of forward-scattered laser light

Birger Stahlberg, Peter Jungner, Tomas Fellman

An important effect to be considered in forward-scattering experiments is demonstrated. Ring-shaped structures are observed in the transverse intensity distribution of the forward-scattered light induced by an intense CW single-mode dye laser in an excited neon system. These structures depend upon the laser detuning from the absorber line centre, the magnetic field strength and the neon gas pressure. A preliminary interpretation of the phenomenon is given and its consequences for the interpretation of forward-scattering spectra are pointed out.

Scattering of atoms by coherent interaction with light

V. A. Grinchuk, A. P. Kazantsev, Gregory I. Surdutovich +4 more

A theoretical and experimental study is presented of the effect of stimulated radiation pressure (SRP) under the conditions of strong saturation of the resonance transition when the interaction times between the atom and the field are short (shorter than the radiative lifetime). An experimental method for studying the scattering of an atomic beam by the field of a standing light wave is described. The measured dependence of the scattering efficiency on the electric field and the detuning from resonance are reported. Experimental relationships are compared with theoretical calculations based on the quasi-classical description of the motion of atoms in the field of a light wave, using an effective potential. It is shown that the efficiency of scattering of atoms by SRP forces is of the order of unity in relatively weak (100–1000-V/cm) laser fields.

Theory of near-resonance scattering of a laser beam on alkali atoms perturbed by a foreign gas

Janusz Czub, Jan Fiutak

The spectrum of resonance fluorescence and scattered light is calculated, on the basis of the dressed-atom approach, in the case of joined S 1/2 -P 1/2 and S 1/2 -P 3/2 transitions. The dependence of the steady-state density matrix on detuning and field strength is investigated for linear polarisation of the laser beam. The influence of the polarisation of the laser beam and of the scattered light on spectral distribution is discussed.

Multipole moments and trap states in forward scattering of resonance light

Bogdan L obodziński, Wojciech Gawlik

We perform nonperturbative analysis of forward scattering of resonance laser light on atoms in magnetic field when the laser drives transitions between states with total angular momenta F=1,2 and study the role of the induced higher-order multipole moments in the forward-scattering signal. It is shown how the multipole moments affect these signals and why not all possible multipoles are revealed for some transitions. The analysis is performed in terms of density-matrix formalism and in terms of coupled and uncoupled (trap) states. Evolution of the trap states in a magnetic field is found to be responsible for specific dependencies of the forward-scattering signals on the multipoles of various ranks. The general theory is applied to the case of the Na ${\mathit{D}}_{1}$ line. We also present a pump-probe method for studying multipoles in systems with states of high angular momenta and with complex transitions overlapping within their Doppler width. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.
