Stationary states of a motionless atom in the quantized field of counterpropagating resonant waves

Abstract

We investigate possible stationary states of a system consisting of a motionless atom in the resonant field of quantized isofrequency counterpropagating waves. Spontaneous relaxation is ignored. In the initial state (in the absence of an interaction), the photon subsystem has definite numbers of photons in each wave. We obtain analytic expressions for the energy spectrum and wave functions of this system. In particular, we show that the system can be in a stationary state only when the average numbers of photons in the counterpropagating waves are equal. We estimate the time it takes a system with an arbitrary initial number of photons in the counterpropagating waves to make a transition to a stationary state with equal numbers of photons in the waves.

Stationary states of the Jaynes Cummings model with atomic centre-of-mass quantum motion: analytical approximation to transfer counterpropagating waves into a standing wave in a large photon number limit

A. Zh. Muradyan, G. A. Muradyan

The eigenstate problem of the Jaynes–Cummings model on the basis of a complete Hamiltonian, including the centre-of-mass kinetic energy operator, is considered. The energy spectrum and wavefunctions in the standing-wave (SW) and counterpropagating-wave (CPW) cases are calculated and compared with each other. It is shown that in the CPW case: (i) the atomic momentum distribution is asymmetric; (ii) the concept of quasimomentum is not applicable and instead the problem concerns the ordinary momentum; (iii) atomic and photonic state distributions are self-consistent; and as a consequence (iv) the mean number of photons in counterpropagating travelling waves and mean atomic momentum are matched. Explicit analytic expressions are proposed to describe the transition from counterpropagating quantized waves to a standing wave. It is also shown that, if the recoil energy is taken into account, the Doppleron resonance is split into two branches, one of which diverges to Bragg-like resonance in high-order range.

Coherent scattering of an atom in the field of a standing wave under conditions of initial quantum correlation of subsystems

Andrew I. Trubilko

Coherent scattering of a two-level atom in the field of a quantized standing wave of a micromaser is considered under conditions of initial quantum correlation between the atom and the field. Such a correlation can be produced by a broadband parametric source. The interaction leading to scattering of the atom from the nonuniform field occurs in the dispersion limit or in the wing of the absorption line of the atom. Apart from the quantized field, the atom simultaneously interacts with two classical counterpropagating waves with different frequencies, which are acting in the plane perpendicular to the atom’s propagation velocity and to the wavevector of the standing wave. Joint action of the quantized field and two classical waves induces effective two-photon and Raman resonance interaction on the working transition. The effective Hamiltonian of the interaction is derived using the unitary transformation method developed for a moving atom. A strong effect is detected, which makes it possible to distinguish the correlated initial state of the atom and the field in the scattering of atom from the state of independent systems. For all three waves, scattering is not observed when systems with quantum correlation are prepared using a high-intensity parametric source. Conversely, when the atom interacts only with the nonuniform field of the standing wave, scattering is not observed in the case of the initial factorized state.

Stationary states of Jaynes-Cummings model with atomic center-of-mass quantum motion: direct comparison of standing-wave and counterpropagating-waves cases

A. Zh. Muradyan, G. A. Muradyan

The eigenstate problem of the Jaynes-Cummings model on the basis of complete Hamiltonian, including the center-of -mass kinetic energy operator, is treated. The energy spectrum and wave functions in standing-wave (SW)- and counterpropagating waves (CPW)- cases are calculated and compared with each other. It is shown that in CPW-case i) the atomic momentum distribution is asymmetric and somewhat narrower in general; ii) the concept of quasimomentum is not applicable and instead the ordinary momentum concerns the problem; iii) atomic and photonic state distributions are self-consistent, and, in consequence iiii) mean number of photons in the counterpropagating traveling waves and mean atomic momentum match. Explicit analytic expressions for energy eigenvalues and eigenfunctions are found in Tavis -Cummings-type approximation [Phys. Rev. 170, 379(1968)] and is pointed, that it implies only the bounded-like states for atomic center-of-mass motion. It is also shown that if the recoil energy is taken into account, the Doppleron resonance is split into two branches, one of which diverges to Bragg-like resonance in the high-order range.

Effect of the state of a quantized electromagnetic field on the interaction with an atom with allowance for the continuum

A. D. Gazazyan

This paper studies the effect of a transition into the continuous spectrum on the “collapse” and “revival” of population oscillations in an atom. It is shown that at large values of the mean number of photons in a radiation field and in conditions of weak ionization the phenomena of collapse and revival can still be observed, but the amplitude of population oscillations decreases exponentially because of the damping of the level. The interaction of a quantized electromagnetic field with a Λ system of an atom when one state is continuous is examined. Expressions are derived for the probability of “survival” of the atom when the quantized field was initially in a state with a given number of photons and when it was in a coherent state. An approximate calculation of the sum in averaging over the photon number distribution in the case of a coherent field leads to expressions for the probabilities of survival of the atom that transform into expressions, as the mean number of photons tends to infinity, corresponding to the case of a field in the representation of a fixed number of photons. The possibility of a stable state existing in a coherent quantized field is examined. It is found that for a Λ system the condition for the existence of a stable state remains valid in the case of a coherent state of the field when the photon number is large.

Refractive index of two-level gas in quantized field of counterpropagating waves

G. A. Muradyan, B. V. Balasanyan

An expression for the refractive index of a gas of two-level atoms in the quantized single-mode field of counterpropagating waves is calculated. It is shown that in the limit of large numbers of photons the result reproduces the quasiclassical result in only the case of standing wave where intensities of both waves are equal. Explanation of this “strange” situation where the abilities of quantum field theory turn to be more restricted than those of classical theory is given.

Scattering of atoms in the field of counterpropagating light waves. Effect of initial conditions

V. I. Romanenko, Леонід Петрович Яценко

The scattering of an atom in the field of counterpropagating light waves is studied under conditions such that the state of the atom is a superposition of the ground and excited states. For the case in which this superposition is created by the field of a traveling wave, the momentum distribution function of the atom after scattering by a standing wave is found analytically in the approximation of a short interaction time, when the atom’s motion can be neglected. Longer interactions of the atom with the field are studied numerically. We also consider the case of counterpropagating light waves consisting of Gaussian or supergaussian pulses.
