Abstract

The quantum-statistical properties of the radiation emitted from two coupled cavities containing one or two two-level atoms are discussed, and both configurations are compared. The results concerning stationary photon statistics, photon blocking, squeezing, antibunching, as well as the spectrum of the second-order correlation are presented.

Quantum coherence and correlations of optical radiation by atomic ensembles interacting with a two-level atom in a microwave cavity

Özgür Esat Müstecaplıoğlu

We examine quantum statistics of optical photons emitted from atomic ensembles which are classically driven and simultaneously coupled to a two-level atom via microwave photon exchange. Quantum statistics and correlations are analyzed by calculating second-order coherence degree, von Neumann entropy, spin squeezing for multiparticle entanglement, as well as genuine two- and three-mode entanglement parameters for steady-state and nonequilibrium situations. Coherent transfer of population between the radiation modes and quantum-state mapping between the two-level atom and the optical modes are discussed. A potential experimental realization of the theoretical results in a superconducting coplanar waveguide resonator containing diamond crystals with nitrogen-vacancy color centers and a superconducting artificial two-level atom is discussed.

Effect of decoherence on the radiative and squeezing properties in a coherently driven trapped two-level atom

Sintayehu Tesfa

Analysis of the effects of decoherence on the radiative and squeezing properties of a coherently driven two-level atom trapped in a resonant cavity applying the corresponding master equation is presented. The atomic dynamics as well as the squeezing and statistical properties of the emitted radiation are investigated. It is found that the atom stays in the lower energy level more often at steady state irrespective of the strength of the coherent radiation and thermal fluctuations entering the cavity. Moreover, a strong external coherent radiation results in the splitting of the line of the emission spectrum, whereas the decoherence broadens the width and significantly decreases the height. It is also found that the emitted radiation exhibits photon anti-bunching, super-Poissonian photon statistics and squeezing, despite the presence of the decoherence which is expected to destroy the quantum features.

Interaction of a two-level atom with a squeezed vacuum: Photon statistics and spectra

Perry R. Rice, Christopher A. Baird

We consider the interaction of a two-level atom with a squeezed vacuum, both in free space and in a cavity of moderate Q. In the latter case, only vacuum modes coupled to the cavity are squeezed. In both cases we calculate the following quantities for the fluorescent light fields: the second-order intensity correlation function ${\mathit{g}}^{(2)}$(\ensuremath{\tau}), the spectrum of squeezing, the coherent spectrum, and the spectrum obtained in a pump-probe absorption measurement. Nonclassical behavior is discussed and comparison to an ordinary vacuum and thermal fields is made. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Quantum properties in the system of atom interacting with twomode cavity

LI Rui-q

We consider the system which is composed of a two-level atom and a two-mode cavity, and two modes are coupled in the cavity. The evolution of the state vector of the system is given. The squeezing, antibunching effect and the photon number statistical distribution of two-mode field are investigated.First, through calculating the fluctuations of two quadrature components of the field,we get that a-mode and b-mode of two-mode field do not both display squeezing.Second,by calculating second-order correlation function of two-mode field, the results show that a-mode and b-mode of two-mode field both display antibunching effects, and there is anti-correlation between the two modes.Third,by means of the numerical calculations,we plot evolution curves of Mandel Q function for different values of the coupling constants between two modes.Through comparing these curves, the influence of coupling constant between two modes on the photon number statistical distribution of the field is discussed. The evolution curves of Mandel Q function show that the two-mode cavity field displays sub-Poisson distribution. Moreover, the sub-Poisson distribution is weakened with increasing of the coupling constant between two modes.

Weak-field transmitted and fluorescent spectra for an atom in a resonant cavity

Perry R. Rice, H. J. Carmichael

There is increasing interest in the photon statistics and spectroscopic properties of the radiation from atoms confined in an optical cavity. Effects such as the cavity enhancement and inhibition of spontaneous emission, which were first observed using microwave cavities, have recently been measured at optical frequencies.1 Recent measurements of squeezing and the dynamic effects of single-quantum-level splittings also demonstrate the possibilities for quantum-statistical studies of coupled atom-cavity systems at optical frequencies.2 We study a single two-level atom confined inside an optical cavity which is driven by coherent light in resonance with both cavity and atom. For weak driving field intensities we have calculated the spectrum of the light transmitted by the cavity and fluorescence out the sides of the cavity.

Coherently driven two-level atom coupled to a broadband squeezed vacuum

Sintayehu Tesfa

We analyse the effects of the external coherent radiation and squeezed input on a two-level atom placed in a cavity applying the corresponding master equation. We study the atomic dynamics as well as the squeezing and statistical properties of the cavity radiation by analytically solving the associated differential equations. It is found that the atom stays in the lower energy level more often at steady state irrespective of the strength of the coherent and squeezed input. However, a strong external coherent radiation splits the line of the emission spectrum, whereas the squeezing broadens the width and significantly decreases the height of the spectrum. It is also found that the emitted radiation exhibits photon anti-bunching, super-Poissonian photon statistics and squeezing.
