Abstract

We investigate accessibility and controllability of a quantum system $S$ coupled to a quantum probe $P$, both described by two-dimensional Hilbert spaces, under the hypothesis that the external control affects only $P$. In this context accessibility and controllability properties describe to what extent it is possible to drive the state of the system $S$ by acting on $P$ and using the interaction between the two systems. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for these properties and we discuss the relation with the entangling capability of the interaction between $S$ and $P$. In particular, we show that controllability can be expressed in terms of the SWAP and $\sqrt{\mathrm{SWAP}}$ operators acting on the composite system.

Incoherent control and entanglement for two-dimensional coupled systems

Raffaele Romano, Domenico D’Alessandro

We study a new approach to the control of a quantum system S, which uses the coupling of S with a quantum probe P. The external control affects only P, and the accessibility and controllability properties describe to what extent it is possible to drive the state of S by varying the initial state of P and using the interaction between the two systems. In particular, we study the case of two-dimensional system and probe. Two situations are considered: either the total system S + P is a closed one, or it is surrounded by a bath of decoupled harmonic oscillators. We give results on the controllability and accessibility properties of this scheme, and we discuss the relation of these properties with the entangling capability of the interaction between S and P. In particular, we show that the SWAP operator plays a special role.

Quantum controllers for quantum systems

Seth Lloyd

This paper discusses fully coherent quantum feedback control, in which the sensors, controller, and actuators are quantum systems and interact coherently with the system to be controlled: as a result, the entire feedback loop is coherent. Unlike conventional semiclassical feedback control of quantum systems, feedback control by quantum controllers is not stochastic, preserves the initial state of the controlled system, and can control quantum systems in ways that are not possible using conventional, incoherent feedback control. In particular, the target state to which the quantum controller drives the system can be entangled with another quantum system. This paper investigates quantum controllers and states necessary and sufficient conditions for a Hamiltonian quantum system to be observable and controllable by a quantum controller.

Indirect Controllability of Quantum Systems; A Study of Two Interacting Quantum Bits

Domenico D’Alessandro, Romano, Raffaele

A quantum mechanical system S is indirectly controlled when the control affects an ancillary system A and the evolution of S is modified through the interaction with A only. A study of indirect controllability gives a description of the set of states that can be obtained for S with this scheme. In this paper, we study the indirect controllability of quantum systems in the finite dimensional case. After discussing the relevant definitions, we give a general necessary condition for controllability in Lie algebraic terms. We present a detailed treatment of the case where both systems, S and A, are two-dimensional (qubits). In particular, we characterize the dynamical Lie algebra associated with S+A, extending previous results, and prove that complete controllability of S+A and an appropriate notion of indirect controllability are equivalent properties for this system. We also prove several further indirect controllability properties for the system of two qubits, and illustrate the role of the Lie algebraic analysis in the study of reachable states.

Controllability Aspects of Quantum Dynamics: A Unified Approach for Closed and Open Systems

I. Kurniawan, Gunther Dirr, Uwe Helmke B

Knowledge about to what extent quantum dynamical systems can be steered by coherent controls is indispensable for future developments in quantum technology. The purpose of this paper is to analyze such controllability aspects for finite dimensional bilinear quantum control systems. We use a unified approach based on Lie-algebraic methods from nonlinear control theory to revisit known and to establish new results for closed and open quantum systems. In particular, we provide a simplified characterization of different notions of controllability for closed quantum systems described by the Liouville-von Neumann equation. We derive new necessary and sufficient conditions for accessibility of open quantum systems modelled by the Lindblad-Kossakowski master equation. To this end, we exploit a well-studied topic of differential geometry, namely the classification of all matrix Lie-groups which act transitively on the Grassmann manifold or the punctured Euclidean space. For the special case of coupled spin-1/2 systems, we obtain a remarkably simple characterization of accessibility. These accessibility results correct and refine previous statements in the quantum control literature.
