Geminal Based and Jordan–Wigner Hartree–Fock Methods Applied to Spin Systems

Zhiyuan Liu

The antisymmetrized geminal power (AGP) wavefunction has proven to be an excellent reference for strong interactions in paired electron systems. In this thesis, we extend the application of AGP methods to spin systems by utilizing the spin to pairing mapping, owing to the su(2) algebra present in both paired electron and spin systems. We have investigated the spin AGP method applied to the XXZ model and J1 − J2 model, where we have identified what we refer to as the multimodal extreme AGP as the mean-field optimized solution. We have also developed correlated methods such as configuration interaction (CI) and coupled cluster (CC) atop spin AGP for these systems. In addition, we have shown that space group symmetry plays a significant role in 2D spin lattices, and have developed space group symmetry projection methods for spin AGP. While the spin AGP method associates a spin with a pair of fermions, Jordan- Wigner Hartree–Fock (JWHF) maps a spin into a single fermion and uses a string to bridge between the spin su(2) and the fermion anticommutation algebras. We have tested JWHF on various spin systems and have additionally discussed the potential application of space group symmetry projection methods to JWHF

Boson mappings and four-particle correlations in algebraic neutron-proton pairing models

Jan Dobeš, Stuart Pittel

Neutron-proton pairing correlations are studied within the context of two solvable models, one based on the algebra SO(5) and the other on the algebra SO(8). In both of these models, particles interact in $L=0$ pairs only. Boson-mapping techniques are applied to these models and shown to provide a convenient methodological tool both for solving such problems and for gaining useful insight into general features of pairing. We first focus on the SO(5) model, which involves generalized $T=1$ pairing. Neither boson mean-field methods nor fermion-pair approximations are able to describe in detail neutron-proton pairing in this model. The analysis suggests, however, that the boson Hamiltonian obtained from a mapping of the fermion Hamiltonian contains a pairing force between bosons, pointing to the importance of boson-boson (or equivalently four-fermion) correlations with isospin $T=0$ and spin $S=0$. These correlations are investigated by carrying out a second boson mapping. Closed forms for the fermion wave functions are given in terms of the fermion-pair operators. Similar techniques are applied---albeit in less detail---to the SO(8) model, involving a competition between $T=1$ and $T=0$ pairing. Conclusions similar to those of the SO(5) analysis are reached regarding the importance of four-particle correlations in systems involving neutron-proton pairing.

A pseudo su(1,1)-algebraic deformation of the Cooper pair in the su(2)-algebraic many-fermion model

Y. Tsue, Constança Providência, João da Providência +1 more

A pseudo su(1,1)-algebra is formulated as a possible deformation of the Cooper pair in the su(2)-algebraic many-fermion system. With the aid of this algebra, it is possible to describe the behavior of individual fermions which are generated as the result of interaction with the external environment. The form presented in this paper is a generalization of a certain simple case developed recently by the authors. The basic idea follows the su(1,1) algebra in the Schwinger boson representation for treating energy transfer between the harmonic oscillator and the external environment. The Hamiltonian is given following the idea of phase space doubling in the thermo-field dynamics formalism, and the time-dependent variational method is applied to this Hamiltonian. Its trial state is constructed in the frame deformed from the BCS-Bogoliubov approach to superconductivity. Several numerical results are shown.
