Abstract

We numerically demonstrate the existence of optical bistability in a finite-size nonlinear bidimensional photonic crystal doped by a microcavity. The numerical results are obtained by a rigorous theory of diffraction. We provide a theoretical model allowing to predict and explain the bistability phenomena from the resonances of the structure.

Optical Bistability and Symmetry Breaking at Resonance Scattering of Light by a Finite Photonic Crystal with a Nonlinear Resonant Cavity

Galina Shadrina, Evgeny N. Bulgakov

Abstract Optical bistability and symmetry breaking under the conditions of plane wave incidence on a system of coupled photonic crystal microcavities containing an inclusion with Kerr susceptibility have been studied. The T-matrix modal method has been generalized for the case of nonlinear microcavities supporting one monopole mode. It has been shown that both phenomena considerably depend not only on external field strength but also on angle of incidence and photonic crystal size.

Controllable optical bistability in photonic-crystal one-atom laser

Xiaoyong Guo, Shuchen Lü

We investigate the property of optical bistability in a photonic-crystal one-atom laser when nonlinear microcavity is present. The physical system consists of a coherently driven two-level light emitter strongly coupled to a high-quality microcavity which is embedded within a photonic crystal and another coherent probing field which has incident into the microcavity. In our case, the microcavity is fabricated by nonlinear material and placed as an impurity in photonic crystal. This study reveals that such a system can exhibit optical bistability. The dependence of threshold value and hysteresis loop on the photonic band gap of the photonic crystal, driving field Rabi frequency and dephasing processes, are studied. Our results clearly illustrate the ability to control optical bistability through suitable photonic-crystal architectures and external coherent driving field, and this study suggests that in a photonic-crystal nonlinear microcavity, the one-atom laser acts as an effective controllable bistable device in the design of all-light digital computing systems in the near future.

Optical bistability of a nonlinear microcavity

Meiping Jiang

Based on Fabry-Perot cavity's theories and efficiency refractive index, the optical bistability of a nonlinear microcavity is studied, and the corresponding mathematical formula are deduced. The theoretical curves are well fitted with those of numerical simulation in other papers. The investigation shows that appropriate frequency-shifting should be preset on the incident light in order to produce bistability for a nonlinear system. If the system is composed of focusing nonlinear medium, the frequency must be redshifted, otherwise it must be blue-shifted.The magnitude of critical shifting is 0.866 times of the width of microcavity resonance mode.

Enhanced nonlinear optics in photonic-crystal microcavities

Focus Serial: Frontiers of Nonlinear Optics Nonlinear photonic-crystal microresonators offer unique fundamental ways of enhancing a variety of nonlinear optical processes. This enhancement improves the performance of nonlinear optical devices to such an extent that their corresponding operation powers and switching times are suitable for their implementation in realistic ultrafast integrated optical devices. Here, we review three different nonlinear optical phenomena that can be strongly enhanced in photonic crystal microcavities. First, we discuss a system in which this enhancement has been successfully demonstrated both theoretically and experimentally, namely, a photonic crystal cavity showing optical bistability properties. In this part, we also present the physical basis for this dramatic improvement with respect to the case of traditional nonlinear devices based on nonlinear Fabry-Perot etalons. Secondly, we show how nonlinear photonic crystal cavities can be also used to obtain complete second-harmonic frequency conversion at very low input powers. Finally, we demonstrate that the nonlinear susceptibility of materials can be strongly modified via the so-called Purcell effect, present in the resonant cavities under study.

The defect mode and bistability in the nonlinear Bragg microcavity composed of one-dimension photonic crystal

Yehui Wang

It is studied the defect mode and bistability properties of a nonlinear medium sandwiched between Bragg reflectors composed of one-dimensional photonic crystal by numerical calculation and theoretical analysis. The influence of defect layer thickness and quasi-periodic Bragg reflectors on defect mode and bistability is discussed. It is revealed that the defect mode shift to lower frequency when the increasing thickness of defect layer or refractive index of Bragg reflectors.Hence microcavity resonant mode is superposition with incident wave mode at lower incident intensity, and produce the bistability with lower threshold. The numerical calculation results accord with theoretical analysis. It is significant for design of photonic crystal microcavity.
