Resonant excitation of the GR centre in diamond

Alan T. Collins, J Szechi, Susan M. Tavender

Photoluminescence in the GR1 zero-phonon region has been examined in detail, using a tunable dye laser resonant with the higher excited states GR2 to GR8. The authors conclude that the temperature-dependent structure observed when electron beam excitation is used is not due to perturbation of the centre resulting from the fast non-radiative relaxation from the higher levels to the first excited state.

Excited-state spectroscopy of single NV defects in diamond using optically detected magnetic resonance

Philipp Neumann, Roman L. Kolesov, V. Jacques +8 more

Using pulsed optically detected magnetic resonance techniques, we directly probe electron-spin resonance transitions in the excited-state of single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color centers in diamond. Unambiguous assignment of excited state fine structure is made, based on changes of NV defect photoluminescence lifetime. This study provides significant insight into the structure of the emitting 3 E excited state, which is invaluable for the development of diamond-based quantum information processing.

Optically detected magnetic resonance of nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond using two-photon excitation

Lam T. Nguyen, Khanh Kieu

We demonstrate the use of two-photon excitation for observing the ground state optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) of nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamonds at room temperature. An ultrafast femtosecond laser at 1040 nm was used for excitation, while fluorescence signal read out was achieved through a combination of a PMT and a lock-in amplifier. The imaging capability of two-photon excitation fluorescence (2PEF) was utilized to map the distribution of NV centers in a bulk diamond and micro-sized diamonds. For the first time, ODMR traces of the nitrogen-vacancy center are observed with two-photon excitation, providing a promising tool for fast 3D quantum sensing and imaging.
