Fock states generation in a kicked cavity with a nonlinear medium

Abstract

We discuss a model of a cavity filled with a passive nonlinear ‚Kerr‘ medium and periodically kicked by a series of ultra-short laser pulses. The nonlinear medium is described by the (2q − 1)th nonlinearity X (2q−1). We find analytical formulas describing the field states inside the cavity. We show that such a system can produce, depending on the order of the nonlinearity, superpositions of several Fock states with the small photon numbers (0,1; 0,1,2; etc). In particular, the one-photon state can be approached during the evolution of the system with X (3) nonlinearity provided the cavity losses are negligible. The purity of states generated in this process, however, can be seriously degraded by the cavity damping. We perform numerical calculations to validate our analytical results.

MODIFICATION OF SQUEEZING IN THE KICKED ANHARMONIC OSCILLATOR 1

Adam Miranowicz, A. Mickiewicz

We discuss a model of a cavity filled with a passive nonlinear ‘Kerr’ medium and periodically kicked by a series of ultra-short laser pulses. We perform numerical calculations to find the variance of the field quadrature to determine the squeezing properties of the cavity field. We show that degree of the squeezing depends on the parameters describing external, pulsed excitation.

Possibility of producing the one-photon state in a kicked cavity with a nonlinear Kerr medium

W. Leoński, R. Tanaś

It is shown that the field in a cavity, periodically kicked with classical pulses and containing a nonlinear Kerr medium, can reach the one-photon quantum state if the amplitude of the kicks and the time between the kicks are appropriately chosen.

Fock State Generation From the Nonlinear Kerr Medium

W. Leoński, R. Tanaś

We discuss a system comprising a nonlinear Kerr medium in a cavity driven by an external coherent field directly or through the parametric process. We assume that the system is initially in the vacuum state, and we show that under appropriate conditions, i.e., properly chosen detuning and intensity of the driving field, the one or two-photon Fock states of the electromagnetic field can be achieved.

Generation of Fock states of the electromagnetic field in a high-Qcavity through the Anderson localization

J. R. Kukliński

We investigate a high-Q cavity partially filled by a medium with ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}^{3}$ nonlinear susceptibility with a coherent signal having the form of a series of short pulses injected into it. We show that the electromagnetic field which builds up in the cavity has strong nonclassical features. For appropriate parameters Anderson localization occurs leading to the generation of states with a narrow photon-number probability distribution. We demonstrate that by adiabatic changing of the size of the cavity one may generate from the vacuum a nearly perfect Fock state of a chosen mode.

Quantum coherence and classical chaos in a pulsed parametric oscillator with a Kerr nonlinearity

Gerard J Milburn, Catherine A. Holmes

We consider a parametric amplifier driven by a periodically pulsed pump field inside a cavity containing a Kerr nonlinearity. The dynamics of the device is modeled as a kicked nonlinear system. The pulsed parametric amplifier constitutes the kick. In between kicks the dynamics is determined by the Kerr nonlinearity and damping. In the absence of damping, a classical description of the device exhibits a rich phase-space structure including fixed points of multiple period and chaos. We contrast the classical behavior of the mean intensity with that predicted by quantum dynamics. The mean photon number inside the cavity is shown to undergo regular collapse and revival in the regular region of the phase space and irregular revivals in the chaotic region. When damping is included, the quantum recurrences are rapidly suppressed, and the classical behavior is restored. In this case a stable steady state is possible. The damping represents the effect of photon-number measurements on the system. We also discuss the photon statistics in the steady state.

Generation of squeezed Schrödinger cats in a tunable cavity filled with a Kerr medium

Roberto de J. León‐Montiel, H. M. Moya-Cessa

In this work we analyze the temporal dynamics of a system comprising an optical cavity filled with a nonlinear Kerr medium, whose frequency is allowed to change during time evolution. By exactly solving the corresponding time-dependent anharmonic-oscillator Hamiltonian, we demonstrate that squeezed coherent-state superpositions can be generated within the optical cavity. Moreover, we show that the squeezing degree of the produced states may be tuned by properly controlling the frequency shift of the cavity, a feature that might lead to interesting studies in the field of quantum state engineering.
