Nonlinear control in optical bistability

Abstract

We study the influence of a small periodic modulation of the input field amplitude in dispersive optical bistability. When the system is initially near one of the two limit points in a stable state, the addition of a small periodic modulation may either stabilize or destabilize the system. We prove that destabilization occurs as a result of critical slowing down when the modulation frequency is decreased.

Enhancement of optical bistability by periodic layering

Roberto Camassa, M. Gregory Forest, Robert E. Knapp

The authors study analytically and numerically the effect of a periodic perturbation in the index of refraction of a nonlinear optical medium. Using a one-dimensional model for monochromatic waves incident on the medium, they find that near resonance between the perturbation and the modulation of the electric field there can be a significant enhancement of optical bistability in the low intensity regime. In particular, they discuss in detail the case of the primary resonance, which is responsible for the most significant effects, and show how one can optimize the bistability curve for the implementation of an optical switch, based on the information provided by the resonance structure.

Dispersive optical bistability: Stability of the steady states

Thomas Erneux, Paul Mandel

We study the semiclassical mean-field theory of single-mode dispersive optical bistability in the limit of a fully developed hysteresis cycle (i.e., in the limit of large values of the bistability parameter C) and when all decay rates have comparable magnitude. We locate (i) on the upper branch instabilities leading to time periodic regimes, (ii) on the lower branch instabilities leading to a switching before the limit point is reached. None of these instabilities are observed in the case of purely absorptive optical bistability.

TIME-DEPENDENT BIFURCATION AND DYNAMICAL BEHAVIORS OF THE ABSORPTIVE OPTICAL BISTABILITY EQUATION

Hua Chen

Time\|dependent bifurcation and dynamical behaviors of the absorptive optical bistability equation are investigated systematically from the point of view of vector field.Internal relations for delayed bifurcation transitions are discussed. When the input optic field is constant, the existence of optical bistability and the phenomenon of critical slowing down are analyzed through a new way. When the input optic field is varied slowly with time linearly or periodically, different scaling relations are given by scaling balances. When the amplitude or frequency of the input optic field is varied slowly and linearly with time, the bifurcation and dynamical behaviors for the time\|dependent system of bistability are also studied .A new strange atractor is revealed..

Dynamic Optical Bistability, Switching and Control of Self-Pulsations of Excitons and Biexcitons

Vasile Tronciu, Anatol Rotaru

The theory of dynamic optical bistability and self-pulsations in condensed media is elaborated. The nonlinearity is due to a process in which two excitons are bound into a biexciton by virtue of their Coulomb interaction. A computer experiment is used to study the switching times between the optical bistability branches. The scenario for the transition to the dynamical chaos mode is found. The action of external periodical force upon the system is investigated and the range of amplitude values and frequencies of external harmonic pump were found at which the chaotic regime becomes nonlinear periodic by transformation of strange attractor into a limit cycle. Finally, we discuss the possibility of detecting these phenomena in experiments.

Optical bistability with dispersion

G. S. Agarwal, Surya P. Tewari

The purpose of this work is to study the behavior of atomic fluctuations and the spectrum of transmitted light by a nonlinear medium with absorption and dispersion. The authors make use of the system-size expansion and apply it to the quantum-mechanical Langevin's equations for the atomic operators and obtain the characteristic curves for bistable behavior, macroscopic atomic expectation values, and the spectrum of the atomic fluctuations. The calculated spectrum of transmitted light exhibits line narrowing near bistable thresholds, discontinuous formation of bands along the high-transmission bistable branch, and hysteresis effects, etc., for detuning $|\ensuremath{\delta}|$ less than a critical value ${\ensuremath{\delta}}_{c}$. For $|\ensuremath{\delta}|>{\ensuremath{\delta}}_{c}$, the discontinuous character of all the physical variables of the system vanishes; the system no longer exhibits bistable behavior. The system, however, still shows cooperative and single-atom behavior separated by a critical value of the intensity of the incident coherent pump at which a critical slowing down of the medium occurs, exhibiting a phase transition.
