System for high-resolution spectroscopy on laser-cooled calcium atoms

Summary form only given.High-resolution spectroscopy of calcium is attractive for several reasons and has been performed by a number of groups. A strong dipole-allowed /sup 1/S/sub 0/-/sup 3/P/sub 1/ transition at 423 nm allows laser cooling and trapping of calcium and can be accessed by diode lasers. The very narrow intercombination transition at 657 nm can be used for developing an optical frequency standard.

Frequency measurement of the 1 S 0 , F = 5 / 2 ↔ 3 P 1 , F = 7 / 2 transition of 27Al+ via quantum logic spectroscopy with 40Ca+

We perform quantum logic spectroscopy with a 27 Al + / 40 Ca + mixed ion crystal in a linear Paul trap for a measurement of the intercombination transition in 27 Al + . Towards this end, Ramsey spectroscopy is used for probing the transition in 27 Al + and the clock transition in 40 Ca + in interleaved measurements. By using the precisely measured frequency of the clock transition in 40 Ca + as a frequency reference, we determine the frequency of the intercombination line to be = 1 122 842 857 334 736 (85) Hz and the Landé g -factor of the excited state to be = 0.428 133(2).

Suppression of a Recoil Component in Nonlinear Doppler-Free Spectroscopy

F. Riehle, Jun Ishikawa, J. Helmcke

A new method to suppress one of the two recoil components in saturation and Ramsey spectroscopy is presented. It is applied to the calcium intercombination line $^{1}S_{0}\ensuremath{-}^{3}P_{1}$ ($\ensuremath{\lambda}\ensuremath{\cong}675$ nm) by optical pumping of the calcium atoms from the metastable $^{3}P_{1}$ state through the $^{3}S_{1}$ state into the $^{3}P_{0}$ or the $^{3}P_{2}$ states. The suppression of the low-frequency recoil component could be deduced in saturated absorption from a narrowing and shift of the Lamb dip as well as observed directly in Ramsey fringe spectroscopy when the recoil doublet was resovled.
