Broadening of hyperfine components of Na D lines perturbed by He

Abstract

The role of the different multipolar components to the perturbation of hyperfine spectra line shapes due to collisions is investigated in the frame of the impact approximation. It is shown that the D 1 lines of Na are equally perturbed whereas the D 2 components exhibit a different broadening. The calculations were performed quantum mechanically with the recent potentials of Hanssen et al. (1979).

Comprehensive theory for line broadening in high-resolution and nonlinear spectroscopies: application to the Na D lines

R. M. Herman, E. W. Weber

A general method for analysing line broadening caused by Doppler, phaseshift, inelastic and velocity-changing collisional effects is proposed for transitions at optical wavelengths. In a unified approach Poisson statistics are used to describe collision probabilities randomly distributed in a time interval which can terminate the optical coherence in a combination of the above effects; markoffian independence is assumed for each collision. Then the dipole moment correlation function is obtained in a form which is virtually exact in accounting for all effects of isotropic forces, and which is correct to second-order terms in the anisotropic interaction potentials. Phenomena as diverse as standard optical pressure broadening, broadening due to velocity-changing collisions in nonlinear spectroscopies, and Dicke narrowing of the Doppler contour are described. The implications of the theory are discussed in detail and applied to the case of the NaD lines perturbed by He buffer gas. Numerical calculations reveal that the substantially different lineshift and broadening parameters in nonlinear and in standard optical spectroscopies can be reasonably well understood within the limitations posed by present uncertainties in the Na 3 2 P-He interaction potentials. However, the large differences in shift and width between the D 2 and D 1 lines in saturation spectroscopy cannot be explained within the present theory.

General Impact Theory of Pressure Broadening

Michel Baranger

The work of two previous papers is extended and a theory of pressure broadening is developed which treats the perturbers quantum mechanically and allows for inelastic collisions, degeneracy, and overlapping lines. The impact approximation is used. It consists in assuming that it takes, on the average, many collisions to produce an appreciable disturbance in the wave function of the atom, and it results in an isolated line having a Lorentz shape. Validity criteria are given. When the approximation is valid, it is allowable to replace the exact, fluctuating interaction of the perturbers with the atom by a constant effective interaction. The effective interaction is expressed in terms of the one-perturber quantum mechanical transition amplitudes on and near the energy shell and its close relationship to the scattering matrix is stressed. The calculation of the line shape in terms of the effective interaction is the same as when the perturbers move on classical paths. Results are written explicitly for isolated lines. If the interaction of the perturbers with the final state can be neglected, the shift and width are proportional to the real and imaginary part of the forward elastic scattering amplitude, respectively. By the optical theorem, the width can also be written in terms of the total cross section. When the interaction in the final state cannot be neglected, the shift and width are still given in terms of the elastic scattering amplitudes, in a slightly more complicated fashion. Finally, rules are given for taking into account rotational degeneracy of the radiating states.

Broadening and intensity redistribution in the Na(3p) hyperfine excitation spectra due to optical pumping in the weak excitation limit

Ihor Sydoryk, Nikolai N. Bezuglov, Ilya I. Beterov +5 more

Detailed analysis of spectral line broadening and variations in relative intensities of hyperfine spectral components due to optical pumping is presented. Hyperfine levels of sodium $3{p}_{1/2}$ and $3{p}_{3/2}$ levels are selectively excited in a supersonic beam at various laser intensities under the conditions when optical pumping time is shorter than transit time of atoms through the laser beam. The excitation spectra exhibit significant line broadening at laser intensities well below the saturation intensity, and redistribution of intensities of hyperfine spectral components is observed, which in some cases is contradicting with intuitive expectations. Theoretical analysis of the dynamics of optical pumping shows that spectral line broadening sensitively depends on the branching coefficient of the laser-driven transition. Analytical expressions for branching ratio dependent critical Rabi frequency and critical laser intensity are derived, which give the threshold for onset of noticeable line broadening by optical pumping. The critical laser intensity has its smallest value for transitions with branching coefficient equal to 0.5, and it can be much smaller than the saturation intensity. Transitions with larger and smaller branching coefficients are relatively less affected. The theoretical excitation spectra were calculated numerically by solving density matrix equations of motion using the split propagation technique, and they well-reproduce the observed effects of line broadening and peak intensity variations. The calculations also show that presence of dark (i.e., not laser coupled) Zeeman sublevels in the lower state results in effective branching coefficients which vary with laser intensity and differ from those implied by the sum rules, and this can lead to peculiar changes in peak ratios of hyperfine components of the spectra.

Impact broadening of Rydberg atomic levels in inelastic collisions with alkali-metal atoms

Владимир Сергеевич Лебедев, V. S. Marchenko

The theory of impact broadening of the isolated spectral lines of the Rydberg atomic series perturbed by neutral particles is developed within the framework of the impulse approximation. The analysis of the broadening process is based on the consideration of the inelastic nl to n' transitions between highly excited states of the Rydberg atom. The role of the potential and resonance scattering of the quasifree electron by a perturbing particle in the impact broadening of the Rydberg nl levels is investigated. It is shown that the general expressions for the broadening cross sections presented in this paper contain the results of asymptotic Alekseev and Sobel'man theory (1965) as special cases. Both elastic and inelastic scattering contributions of the perturber by the parent core of Rydberg atom to the broadening cross sections are also considered within the framework of the 'shake' model. The results obtained are used for a quantitative explanation of experimental data on the broadening of Rydberg atomic levels perturbed by alkali-metal atoms. The energies and widths of the 3 P resonances on the quasidiscrete levels of the negative K - and Rb - ions are determined.
