High-Stability Rb Optical Clock Based on Pulse-Modulated Broad-Spectrum Comb-Tooth Laser

Xiaolei Guan, Tiantian Shi, Jianxiang Miao +2 more

We have proposed a new scheme to realize the Rb optical clock using a pulse-modulated broad-spectrum multi-frequency laser. By applying a pulse-modulated signal to a 420 nm external cavity diode laser, a broad-spectrum comb-tooth laser with multiple frequency components is generated, which can interact with almost all the Rb atoms with different transverse velocities, so that more Rb atoms in the Rb cell can contribute to the frequency stabilization signal of the clock transition spectral line. The effective atomic number is expected to be improved by a factor of 102- 103, which will significantly improve the signal-to-noise ratio of spectrum, so as to optimize the frequency stability of Rb optical clock. The Rb optical frequency standard with high stability can be widely used in laser physics and precision measurement.

Coherent manipulation of trapped Rb atoms by overlapping frequency-chirped laser pulses: theory and experiment

Károly Varga-Umbrich, Jozsef S. Bakos, Gagik P. Djotyan +6 more

Abstract We present results of experimental and theoretical studies of coherent momentum transfer to rubidium atoms in a magneto-optical trap by pairs of counter-propagating frequency-modulated (chirped) laser pulses. The counter-propagating pulse pairs partially overlap each other leading to multiphoton interaction processes. We show experimentally that the mechanical momentum transferred to atoms in this scheme of interaction is larger than in the case of non-overlapping pulse pairs acting separately on the atoms. Results of numerical simulations that take into account all relevant hyperfine energy states of Rb along with the influence of relaxation and re-pumping processes are in good agreement with obtained experimental results. Cancellation of the coherent accumulation in rubidium atoms excited by a train of femtosecond pulses

Ticijana Ban, Damir Aumiler, Hrvoje Skenderović +3 more

We investigated the coherence accumulation in Rb atoms excited by a train of femtosecond pulses. The coherence accumulation results in the velocity selective optical pumping of Rb hyperfine levels, observed by a cw probe laser. The effects of the pulse train excitation on the cw probe laser transmission were investigated, depending on the probe laser power. We observed the probe laser absorption increase in the strong probe case, followed by the reduction of the modulations in the probe laser absorption. Results show that accumulation of population and coherence can be effectively reduced and eventually destroyed by increasing the cw laser intensity. A strong cw laser can therefore serve as a switch from the pulse-train to pulse-by-pulse type of interaction of Rb atoms with the fs laser. We developed a density-matrix based theoretical model of the eight-level Rb atoms interacting with the fs and cw laser fields, and present agreement with the experimental results.
