Study of transitions induced by squeezed light via path integral methods

Abstract

In the present paper we study transitions induced by squeezed light generated by an optical device as a degenerate parametric amplifier. We adopt the dipole approximation and approach the problem by path integral methods. The light variables do not appear in the final propagator as they are integrated over. Using perturbation theory, we calculate the transition probability from the ground state 1s of the hydrogen atom to the state 3d. Further we obtain the equation obeyed by a free electron in squeezed light.

Path-integral approach to the quantum theory of the degenerate parametric amplifier

Mark S. Hillery, Muhammad Suhail Zubairy

The quantum theory of the degenerate parametric amplifier is usually treated in the parametric approximation where the pump field is treated classically. In this paper we present a fully quantized theory of this nonlinear optical device using a path-integral approach. A perturbation series, the first term of which corresponds to the parametric approximation, is employed to evaluate explicitly the coherent-state propagator. The question of the validity of the parametric approximation is considered and the conditions under which this approximation is justified are elucidated. Finally, certain correlation functions for the signal-mode operators are calculated that are needed to study squeezed states. It is shown that the quantum nature of the pump field tends to decrease the squeezing.

Quantum spatial propagation of squeezed light in a degenerate parametric amplifier

Ivan Deutsch, J. C. Garrison

Differential equations which describe the steady state spatial evolution of nonclassical light are established using standard quantum field theoretic techniques. A Schroedinger equation for the state vector of the optical field is derived using the quantum analog of the slowly varying envelope approximation (SVEA). The steady state solutions are those that satisfy the time independent Schroedinger equation. The resulting eigenvalue problem then leads to the spatial propagation equations. For the degenerate parametric amplifier this method shows that the squeezing parameter obey nonlinear differential equations coupled by the amplifier gain and phase mismatch. The solution to these differential equations is equivalent to one obtained from the classical three wave mixing steady state solution to the parametric amplifier with a nondepleted pump.

DIFFRACTION AND SQUEEZED LIGHT

Robert R. Tucci

We discuss the effect of diffraction on squeezed light propagation. All electric fields concerned are approximated to be monochromatic and paraxial. We consider: (1)(propagation without gain) a squeezed signal propagating in free space, and (2)(propagation with gain) a squeezed signal propagating in a non-linear crystal which amplifies the signal by a process of frequency halving (degenerate parametric amplification). The pump beam required for this process is assumed to have a Gaussian amplitude profile. For propagation without gain, our expression for the final signal is exact, but for propagation with gain, it is given as a perturbative expansion. The lowest order term in the expansion neglects diffraction of the signal and assumes flat pump wavefronts. Higher order terms include these factors and thus improve the accuracy with which the signal’s transverse behavior is described. We present graphs showing the dependence of squeezing on pump and signal beam parameters. We also find and discuss approximate formulas that characterize these graphs in various regimes.

A Theoretical Study of the Generation of Squeezed-State Light via Degenerate Parametric Amplification

David D. Crouch

This thesis is primarily a theoretical study of degenerate parametric amplification as a means of generating squeezed-state light. i) A wideband traveling-wave formalism is developed for analyzing quantum mechanically a degenerate parametric amplifier. The formalism is based on spatial differential equations — spatial Langevin equations — that propagate temporal Fourier components of the field through the nonlinear medium. In addition to the parametric nonlinearity, the Langevin equations include absorption and associated fluctuations, dispersion, and pump quantum fluctuations. The dominant effects of dispersion and pump quantum fluctuations on the squeezing produced by a degenerate parametric amplifier are analyzed. ii) The wideband formalism of i) is used to carry out a more detailed analysis of the effects of phase mismatching. With the assumption of a lossless medium and a classical pump, we find that parametric amplification is capable of generating squeezed-state light over a wide band if materials with large χ(2) nonlinearities can be found, and that the squeezing bandwidth can be enhanced by phase mismatching away from degeneracy. iii) We consider again the effect of pump quantum fluctuations on the squeezing produced by parametric amplification. We perform discrete-mode calculations for a parametric amplifier with a quantum pump, and discuss some of the limitations of calculations of this sort in quantum optics. We derive stochastic differential equations (SDEs) for one- and two-mode parametric amplifiers, and from them obtain an iterative solution showing that pump quantum fluctuations impose a limitation on the degree of squeezing obtainable from a parametric amplifier. iv) A possible application of squeezing is considered; in particular, we study the effects of squeezing the intracavity noise in a laser oscillator. We solve the classical noise problem of a realistic laser model by making a bold — and possibly unrealizable — assumption, that the in-phase and quadrature Langevin sources which are responsible for the "noisiness" of the laser can be squeezed. We show that the effect of squeezing the in-phase quadrature is to reduce the phase noise, including the linewidth, of the laser but, due to amplitude-phase coupling, not to eliminate them altogether.

Two-Level Atom with Squeezed Light from Optical Parametric Oscillators

Tamirat Abebe, Nebiyu Gemechu

The dynamics of a coherently driven two-level atom with parametric amplifier and coupled to a vacuum reservoir is analyzed. The combination of the master equation and the quantum Langevin equation is presented to study the quantum properties of light. By using these equations, we have determined the time evolution of the expectation values of the cavity mode and atomic operators. Moreover, with the aid of these results, the correlation properties of noise operators, and the large-time approximation scheme, we calculate the mean photon number, power spectrum, second-order correlation function, and quadrature variances for the cavity-mode light and fluorescence. It is found that the half-width of the power spectrum for the fluorescent light in the presence of a parametric amplifier increases, while it decreases for the cavity-mode light. Moreover, we have found the probability for the atom to be in the upper level in the presence of a parametric amplifier.

Squeezing properties of nondegenerate three-level laser with degenerate parametric amplifier

Misrak Getahun, Edris Salih

We study the squeezing properties of the light generated by nondegenerate three-level laser in which the three-level atoms are in cascade configuration with degenerate parametric oscillator. We obtain the c-number Langevin equations associated with the normal ordering using the pertinent master equation. Making use of the solutions of the c-number Langevin equations, we calculate the quadrature variances. The results show that the two-mode light produced by the system under consideration is in squeezed state and the squeezing occurs in the minus quadrature. The degree of squeezing increase with the linear gain coefficient and almost perfect squeezing can be obtained for large values of the linear gain coefficient and the atoms initially prepared in lower level slightly greater than in the upper level. Moreover, the presence of nonlinear crystal increases the degree of squeezing for single mode and two-mode lights.
