Abstract

Lifetimes of 21 excited states in atomic Yb were measured using time-resolved fluorescence detection following pulsed laser excitation. The lifetime of the 4${\mathit{f}}^{14}$5d6${\mathit{s}}^{\mathrm{}3}$${\mathit{D}}_{1}$ state, which is of particular importance for a proposed study of parity nonconservation in atoms, was measured to be 380(30) ns. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Measurement of the lifetime of the 6p P21/2o level of Yb+

Steven Olmschenk, David Hayes, Dzmitry Matsukevich +4 more

We present a precise measurement of the lifetime of the $6p\text{ }{^{2}P}_{1/2}^{o}$ excited state of a single trapped ytterbium ion $({\text{Yb}}^{+})$. A time-correlated single-photon counting technique is used, where ultrafast pulses excite the ion and the emitted photons are coupled into a single-mode optical fiber. By performing the measurement on a single atom with fast excitation and excellent spatial filtering, we are able to eliminate common systematics. The lifetime of the $6p\text{ }{^{2}P}_{1/2}^{o}$ state is measured to be $8.12\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.02\text{ }\text{ns}$, in good agreement with previous experimental measurements and some theoretical values.

Studies on natuval radiative lifetime in perterbed Rydberg odd parity sequences of Yb I

Peng Weixian

Laser-atomic-beam and time resolved laser spectroscopy have been used to measure natural radiative lifetimes of 23 levels in perterbed Rydberg odd parity sequences of Yb with three-step excitation. The influence of several effects on measured lifetime values has been analyzed.

Lifetimes of Rydberg levels in the perturbed 6snp 3 P2 series of ytterbium i

Guo Chuan, Yingning Yu, Hua Yu +2 more

Using three-step laser excitation in an atomic beam and a time-resolved spectroscopy technique, we measured both the lifetimes of the Rydberg levels of Yb i belonging to the perturbed series 6nsp $^{3}$${\mathit{P}}_{2}$ and the lifetimes of the perturbing 4${\mathit{f}}^{13}$5${\mathit{d}}^{2}$6s $^{3}$${\mathit{P}}_{2}$${,}^{1}$${\mathit{D}}_{2}$ levels. An expected shortening has been observed for the lifetimes of those levels which are strongly mixed with the perturbers.

Radiative lifeiime measurements on Tm atoms by observing laser-induced time resolved fluorescence

Z Iang, Ang L

Lifetime measurements on Tm atoms have been performed with two-step laser excitation and observing the time-resolved fluorescence released from the excited states to be .measured. Ten lifetime values of neutral Tm atoms are first reported.

Lifetime and oscillator-strength studies involving the (6s6p )3 P1 -(6s7s )1 S0 transition of atomic Yb

Yu Bai, THOMAS W. MOSSBERG

The oscillator strength of the (6s6p${)\mathrm{}}^{3}$${P}_{1}$-(6s7s${)\mathrm{}}^{1}$${S}_{0}$ transition and the lifetime of the (6s7s${)\mathrm{}}^{1}$${S}_{0}$ state in $^{174}\mathrm{Yb}$ have been measured to be (8.0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.6)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}4}$ and 45.8\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.0 nsec, respectively. The former value was obtained by use of coherent optical techniques (optical nutation and ac Stark splitting), while the latter was obtained by monitoring cascade fluorescence following pulsed excitation.

Measurement of the lowest S-state lifetime of Al, Ga, In, and Tl†

Mark D. Havey, L. C. Balling, J. J. Wright

The lifetimes of the lowest 2S1/2 state in Al, Ga, In, and Tl have been measured by observing the exponential decay of the fluorescence arising from the 2S1/2–2P3/2 transition in each atom, following selective excitation of the 2S1/2 state by an N2 laser-pumped dye laser. The values obtained for the 2S1/2 state lifetimes were τ(A1) = (6.8 ± 0.3) ns, τ(Ga) = (7.0 ± 0.4) ns, τ(In) = (7.4 ± 0.3) ns, τ(Tl) = (7.8 ± 0.3) ns.
