Rotating three-dimensional solitons

Abstract

We study formation of rotating three-dimensional solitons (azimuthons) in Bose Einstein condensate with attractive nonlocal nonlinear interaction. In particular, we demonstrate formation of toroidal rotating solitons and investigate their stability. The presence of repulsive contact interaction does not prevent the existence of those solutions, but allows to control their rotation.

Rotating three-dimensional solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates with gravitylike attractive nonlocal interaction

Fabian Maucher, Stefan Skupin, Ming Shen +1 more

We study formation of rotating three-dimensional high-order solitons (azimuthons) in Bose Einstein condensate with attractive nonlocal nonlinear interaction. In particular, we demonstrate formation of toroidal rotating solitons and investigate their stability. We show that variational methods allow a very good approximation of such solutions and predict accurately the soliton rotation frequency. We also find that these rotating localized structures are very robust and persist even if the initial condensate conditions are rather far from the exact soliton solutions. Furthermore, the presence of repulsive contact interaction does not prevent the existence of those solutions, but allows one to control their rotation. We conjecture that self-trapped azimuthons are generic for condensates with attractive nonlocal interaction.

Two-dimensional nonlocal vortices, multipole solitons, and rotating multisolitons in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates

Volodymyr M. Lashkin

We have performed numerical analysis of the two-dimensional (2D) soliton solutions in Bose-Einstein condensates with nonlocal dipole-dipole interactions. For the modified 2D Gross-Pitaevski equation with nonlocal and attractive local terms, we have found numerically different types of nonlinear localized structures such as fundamental solitons, radially symmetric vortices, nonrotating multisolitons (dipoles and quadrupoles), and rotating multisolitons (azimuthons). By direct numerical simulations we show that these structures can be made stable.

Stable three-dimensional spatially modulated vortex solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates

Volodymyr M. Lashkin

We present exact numerical solutions in the form of spatially localized three-dimensional (3D) nonrotating and rotating (azimuthon) multipole solitons in the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) confined by a parabolic trap. We numerically show that the 3D azimuthon solutions exist as a continuous family parametrized by the angular velocity (or, equivalently, the modulational depth). By a linear stability analysis we show that 3D azimuthons with a sufficiently large phase modulational depth can be stable. The results are confirmed by direct numerical simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation.

Stability of Dark Solitons in Three Dimensional Dipolar Bose-Einstein Condensates

Rejish Nath, P. Pedri, Luis Santos

The dynamical stability of dark solitons in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates is studied. For standard short-range interacting condensates, dark solitons are unstable against transverse excitations in two and three dimensions. On the contrary, due to its nonlocal character, the dipolar interaction allows for stable 3D stationary dark solitons, opening a qualitatively novel scenario in nonlinear atom optics. We discuss in detail the conditions to achieve this stability, which demand the use of an additional optical lattice, and the stability regimes.

Two-dimensional multisolitons and azimuthons in Bose-Einstein condensates

Volodymyr M. Lashkin

We present numerical solutions in the form of spatially localized nonrotating and rotating (azimuthon) multisolitons in the two-dimensional (``pancake-shaped configuration'') Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) confined by a parabolic trap. The numerical relaxation procedure with a stabilizing factor is used.

Three-dimensional solitons in coupled atomic-molecular Bose-Einstein condensates

Timothy G. Vaughan, Karen V. Kheruntsyan, P. D. Drummond

We present a theoretical analysis of three-dimensional (3D) matter-wave solitons and their stability properties in coupled atomic and molecular Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). The soliton solutions to the mean-field equations are obtained in an approximate analytical form by means of a variational approach. We investigate soliton stability within the parameter space described by the atom-molecule conversion coupling, the atom-atom $s$-wave scattering, and the bare formation energy of the molecular species. In terms of ordinary optics, this is analogous to the process of sub- or second-harmonic generation in a quadratic nonlinear medium modified by a cubic nonlinearity, together with a phase mismatch term between the fields. While the possibility of formation of multidimensional spatiotemporal solitons in pure quadratic media has been theoretically demonstrated previously, here we extend this prediction to matter-wave interactions in BEC systems where higher-order nonlinear processes due to interparticle collisions are unavoidable and may not be neglected. The stability of the solitons predicted for repulsive atom-atom interactions is investigated by direct numerical simulations of the equations of motion in a full 3D lattice. Our analysis also leads to a possible technique for demonstrating the ground state of the Schr\"odinger-Newton and related equations that describe Bose-Einstein condensates with nonlocal interparticle forces.
