Stability of Dark Solitons in Three Dimensional Dipolar Bose-Einstein Condensates

Abstract

The dynamical stability of dark solitons in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates is studied. For standard short-range interacting condensates, dark solitons are unstable against transverse excitations in two and three dimensions. On the contrary, due to its nonlocal character, the dipolar interaction allows for stable 3D stationary dark solitons, opening a qualitatively novel scenario in nonlinear atom optics. We discuss in detail the conditions to achieve this stability, which demand the use of an additional optical lattice, and the stability regimes.

Two-Dimensional Bright Solitons in Dipolar Bose-Einstein Condensates

P. Pedri, Luis Santos

We analyze the physics of bright solitons in 2D dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates. These solitons, which are not possible in short-range interacting gases, constitute the first realistic proposal of fully mobile stable 2D solitons in ultracold gases. In particular, we discuss the necessary conditions for the existence of stable 2D bright solitary waves by means of a 3D analysis of the lowest-lying excitations. We show that the anisotropy of the dipolar potential is crucial, since sufficiently large dipolar interactions can destabilize the 2D soliton. Additionally, we study the scattering of solitary waves, which, contrary to the contact-interacting case, is inelastic and could lead to fusion of the waves. Finally, the experimental possibilities for observability are discussed.

Exploring the stability and dynamics of dipolar matter-wave dark solitons

Matthew Edmonds, Thomas Bland, Duncan H J O’Dell +1 more

We study the stability, form, and interaction of single and multiple dark solitons in quasi-one-dimensional dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates. The solitons are found numerically as stationary solutions in the moving frame of a nonlocal Gross Pitaevskii equation and characterized as a function of the key experimental parameters, namely the ratio of the dipolar atomic interactions to the van der Waals interactions, the polarization angle, and the condensate width. The solutions and their integrals of motion are strongly affected by the phonon and roton instabilities of the system. Dipolar matter-wave dark solitons propagate without dispersion and collide elastically away from these instabilities, with the dipolar interactions contributing an additional repulsion or attraction to the soliton-soliton interaction. However, close to the instabilities, the collisions are weakly dissipative.

Stability analysis on dark solitons in quasi-1D Bose–Einstein condensate with three-body interactions

Yushan Zhou, Hongjuan Meng, Juan Zhang +7 more

The stability properties of dark solitons in quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) loaded in a Jacobian elliptic sine potential with three-body interactions are investigated theoretically. The solitons are obtained by the Newton-Conjugate Gradient method. A stationary cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation is derived to describe the profiles of solitons via the multi-scale technique. It is found that the three-body interaction has distinct effect on the stability properties of solitons. Especially, such a nonlinear system supports the so-called dark solitons (kink or bubble), which can be excited not only in the gap, but also in the band. The bubbles are always linearly and dynamically unstable, and they cannot be excited if the three-body interaction is absent. Both stable and unstable kinks, depending on the physical parameters, can be excited in the BEC system.

Two-dimensional bright and dark-in-bright dipolar Bose–Einstein condensate solitons on a one-dimensional optical lattice

S K Adhikari

Abstract We study the statics and dynamics of anisotropic, stable, bright and dark-in-bright dipolar quasi-two-dimensional Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) solitons on a one-dimensional (1D) optical-lattice (OL) potential. These solitons mobile in a plane perpendicular to a 1D OL trap can have both repulsive and attractive contact interactions. Dark-in-bright solitons are the excited states of bright solitons. The solitons, when subjected to a small perturbation, exhibit sustained breathing oscillation. Dark-in-bright solitons can be created by phase imprinting a bright soliton. At medium velocities the collision between two solitons is found to be quasi-elastic. Results are demonstrated by a numerical simulation of the three-dimensional mean-field Gross–Pitaevskii equation in three spatial dimensions employing realistic interaction parameters for a dipolar 164 Dy BEC.

Dark spherical shell solitons in three-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates: Existence, stability, and dynamics

Wenlong Wang, P. G. Kevrekidis, R. Carretero-González +1 more

In this work we study spherical shell dark soliton states in three-dimensional atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. Their symmetry is exploited in order to analyze their existence, as well as that of topologically charged variants of the structures, and, importantly, to identify their linear stability Bogoliubov--de Gennes spectrum. We compare our effective one-dimensional spherical and two-dimensional cylindrical computations with the full three-dimensional numerics. An important conclusion is that such spherical shell solitons can be stable sufficiently close to the linear limit of the isotropic condensates considered herein. We have also identified their instabilities leading to the emergence of vortex line and vortex ring cages. In addition, we generalize effective particle pictures of lower-dimensional dark solitons and ring dark solitons to the spherical shell solitons concerning their equilibrium radius and effective dynamics around it. In this case too, we favorably compare, qualitatively and quantitatively, the resulting predictions such as the shell equilibrium radius with full numerical solutions in three dimensions.

Stability of dipolar soliton in crossed linear and nonlinear optical lattices

Yong Wen-Mei, Chen Hai-Jun

Stability of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) soliton in crossed linear and nonlinear optical lattices is investigated using variational approximation. The Euler-Lagrange equations for variational parameters and the effective potential are derived by means of a cylindrically symmetric Gaussian ansatz, while the equilibrium widths are determined by minimization of the effective potential. In the presence of a periodic spatial variation of short-range contact interaction, the localized bound states can exist for both attractive and repulsive dipolar interactions. And the domain of stable dipolar BEC solitons is illustrated in a phase plot of the nonlinearities. Finally, we give the evolution of the variational width for different values of the nonlinearities.
