Path integration of the time-dependent forced oscillator with a two-time quadratic action

Abstract

Using the prodistribution theory proposed by DeWitt-Morette [C. DeWitt-Morette, Commun. Math. Phys. 28, 47 (1972); C. DeWitt-Morette, A. Maheshwari, and B. Nelson, Phys. Rep. 50, 257 (1979)], the path integration of a time-dependent forced harmonic oscillator with a two-time quadratic action has been given in terms of the solutions of some integrodifferential equations. We then evaluate explicitly both the classical path and the propagator for the specific kernel introduced by Feynman in the polaron problem. Our results include the previous known results as special cases.

Path integration of a general two-time quadratic action by prodistribution approach

Dinkar C. Khandekar, Sunil Datta, S. V. Lawande

The theory of prodistributions is applied to path integrate a general two-time quadratic action characterizing memory effects. The resulting Feynman propagator is exact and is in the form of an exponential integral over a single variable. A case where the integral is explicitly evaluated, for an arbitrary memory kernel, is presented to highlight the closed analytical structure of the propagator obtained. All special cases treated in the literature follow from this general expression.

Explicit evaluation of a path integral with memory kernel

F. Brosens, J. T. Devreese

An explicit expression is presented for the path integral of an harmonic oscillator interacting with itself in the past. The time dependence of the memory kernel is assumed to be exponential. The relation with the Feynman trial action for the variational calculation of the polaron ground state energy is discussed.

Exact solution of a time-dependent quantal harmonic oscillator with damping and a perturbative force

Dinkar C. Khandekar, S. V. Lawande

The problem of a quantal harmonic oscillator with damping and a time-dependent frequency acted on by a time-dependent perturbative force is exactly solved. The wavefunctions are found in Schrödinger representation using the theory of explicitly time-dependent invariants and also by an expansion of the Feynman propagator. The propagator is obtained in exactly closed form by an explicit path integration of the classical Lagrangian. It is found that the wavefunctions and the propagator depend only on the solution of classical damped oscillator through a single function ρ (t). The function ρ (t) itself may be obtained as a solution of a second order nonlinear differential equation under the appropriate set of initial conditions.

The propagator of the time-dependent forced harmonic oscillator with time-dependent damping

Bin Kang Cheng

By using the Caldirola–Kanai Hamiltonian and by applying Feynman polygonal paths, exact evaluation of the propagator of one-dimensional time-dependent forced and damped harmonic oscillator, based on the work of Montroll in deriving the propagator of the harmonic oscillator with time-dependent frequency, is possible. The results are compared with previously found results.

Feynman propagator for time-dependent Lagrangians possessing an invariant quadratic in momentum

Asish Kumar Dhara, S. V. Lawande

A class of time-dependent classical Lagrangians possessing an invariant quadratic in momentum is considered from a quantal point of view. Quantum mechanics is introduced through the Feynman propagator defined as a path integral involving the classical action. It is shown, without carrying out an explicit path integration, that the propagator for such a time-dependent system is related to the propagator of an associated time-independent problem. The expansion of the propagator in terms of the eigenfunctions of the invariant operator is derived and the equivalence of the present theory to that of Lewis and Reisenfeld (1969) is discussed. Explicit analytic forms of propagators are obtained for some cases to illustrate the application of the present approach.

Exact propagator for a time−dependent harmonic oscillator with and without a singular perturbation

Dinkar C. Khandekar, S. V. Lawande

By using Feynman’s definition of a path integral, exact propagators for a time−dependent harmonic oscillator with and without an inverse quadratic potential have been evaluated. It is shown that these propagators depend only on the solutions of the classical unperturbed oscillator. The relations between these propagators, the invariants, and the Schrödinger equation are also discussed.
