Generalized nonlinear Langevin equation from quantum nonlinear projection operator

Jin Chun Hu

We systematically derive the quantum generalized nonlinear Langevin equation using Morozov's projection operator method. This approach extends the linear Mori-Zwanzig projection operator technique, allowing for the inclusion of nonlinear interactions among macroscopic modes. Additionally, we obtain the quantum generalized Fokker-Planck equation within the Heisenberg picture, which is consistent with Morozov's original formulation. These equations are fundamentally significant in nonequilibrium statistical physics, particularly in scenarios characterized by enhanced fluctuations, such as anomalous transport phenomena near critical points. The quantum nature of the derived generalized Langevin and Fokker-Planck equations is anticipated to provide a more detailed description than their classical equivalents. Specifically, the noise kernel in the quantum generalized Langevin equation is multiplicative, which broadens the applicability beyond Gaussian approximations. Given specific interactions, these equations are expected to be instrumental in investigating critical transport phenomena.

Dual Lanczos vector space. II. Lanczos transformations and contracted descriptions of relaxation processes

William A. Wassam

We consider the relationship of the dual Lanczos transformation method, introduced in paper I, to the projection operator methods of Mori and Zwanzig for treating relaxation processes. It is shown that Mori’s memory function formalism and ‘‘generalized’’ Langevin description of relaxation processes represents a special case in the reversible limit of the ‘‘global’’ dual Lanczos transformation method. Unlike Mori’s memory function formalism, the present results are not limited to the description of autocorrelation functions for reversible systems. Our results apply to auto- and cross-correlation functions, as well as, the ensemble average of observables for both reversible and irreversible systems. In fact, we are able to construct a continued fraction representation of both auto- and cross-correlation functions. Introducing a ‘‘bath’’ dual Lanczos transformation scheme, we show that the first bath dual Lanczos projection gives rise to the Zwanzig projection operator method for constructing an equation of motion for a reduced distribution function. Additional bath dual Lanczos projections allow us to go beyond the usual results obtained in applications of the Zwanzig method.

Projection-operator methods and time-correlation functions in two-level atoms

Subir K. Bose, David T. Ng

Zwanzig's projection operator and Mori's non-Markoffian generalized Langevin equation methods are applied to the problem of two-level atoms. Time-correlation functions of appropriate variables are calculated in a perturbation scheme.
