Spontaneous Macroscopic Spin Polarization in Independent Spinor Bose-Einstein Condensates

Abstract

We present experimental evidence for the spontaneous formation of a macroscopic spin polarization in overlapping regions of two independent Bose-Einstein condensates produced in different hyperfine states of 87Rb. The condensates are independent in the sense that we do not explicitly introduce a relative phase between them. A single "spin-tip" pulse maps the transverse spin polarization into longitudinal spin polarization, and the atomic density distributions are measured with a Stern-Gerlach imaging method. The resulting matter-wave interference patterns are anticorrelated.

Matter-wave interference versus spontaneous pattern formation in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

Marcin Witkowski, R. Gartman, Bartłomiej Nagórny +7 more

We describe effects of matter-wave interference of spinor states in the ${}^{87}$Rb Bose-Einstein condensate. The components of the $F=2$ manifold are populated by forced Majorana transitions and then fall freely due to gravity in an applied magnetic field. Weak inhomogeneities of the magnetic field, present in the experiment, impose relative velocities onto different ${m}_{F}$ components, which show up as interference patterns upon measurement of atomic density distributions with a Stern-Gerlach imaging method. We show that interference effects may appear in experiments even if gradients of the magnetic field components are eliminated but higher-order inhomogeneity is present and the duration of the interaction is long enough. In particular, we show that the resulting matter-wave interference patterns can mimic spontaneous pattern formation in the quantum gas.

Observation of Dipole-Induced Spin Texture in an Rb87 Bose-Einstein Condensate

Yujiro Eto, Hiroki Saito, Takuya Hirano

We report the formation of spin texture resulting from the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction in a spin-2 87Rb Bose-Einstein condensate. The spinor condensate is prepared in the transversely polarized spin state and the time evolution is observed under a magnetic field of 90 mG with a gradient of 3 mG/cm using Stern-Gerlach imaging. The experimental results are compared with numerical simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, which reveals that the observed spatial modulation of the longitudinal magnetization is due to the spin precession in an effective magnetic field produced by the dipole-dipole interaction. These results show that the dipole-dipole interaction has considerable effects even on spinor condensates of alkali metal atoms.

Spinor dynamics in a mixture of spin-1 and spin-2 Bose-Einstein condensates

Yujiro Eto, Hitoshi Shibayama, Hiroki Saito +1 more

The spinor dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates of $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms with hyperfine spins of 1 and 2 are investigated. A mixture of spinor condensates is generated in the transversely polarized spin-1 and the longitudinally polarized spin-2 states using simultaneous Ramsey interferometry. In the subsequent dynamics, temporal modulation of spin-1 magnetization is observed in the spinor mixture due to the spin-dependent interaction with the spin-2 component. By comparison with numerical simulations based on the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we find that the observed nonferromagnetic dynamics reflect the ground-state properties of the spinor mixture.

Emission of Spin-Correlated Matter-Wave Jets from Spinor Bose-Einstein Condensates

Kyungtae Kim, Junhyeok Hur, SeungJung Huh +2 more

We report the observation of matter-wave jet emission in a strongly ferromagnetic spinor Bose-Einstein condensate of ^{7}Li atoms. Directional atomic beams with |F=1,m_{F}=1⟩ and |F=1,m_{F}=-1⟩ spin states are generated from |F=1,m_{F}=0⟩ state condensates or vice versa. This results from collective spin-mixing scattering events, where spontaneously produced pairs of atoms with opposite momentum facilitates additional spin-mixing collisions as they pass through the condensates. The matter-wave jets of different spin states (|F=1,m_{F}=±1⟩) can be a macroscopic Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen state with spacelike separation. Its spin-momentum correlations are studied by using the angular correlation function for each spin state. Rotating the spin axis, the inter- and intraspin-momentum correlation peaks display a high-contrast oscillation, indicating collective coherence of the atomic ensembles. We provide numerical calculations that describe the experimental results at a quantitative level. Our Letter paves the way to generating macroscopic quantum entanglement with the spin and motional degree of freedom with massive particles. It has a wide range of applications from quantum information science to the fundamental studies of quantum entanglement.

Stern-Gerlach entanglement in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

Sara Cruz-Barrios, Maria Carolina Nemes, A. F. R. de Toledo Piza

Entanglement of spin and position variables produced by spatially inhomogeneous magnetic fields of Stern-Gerlach type acting on spinor Bose-Einstein condensates may lead to interference effects at the level of one-boson densities. A model is worked out for these effects which is amenable to analytical calculation for gaussian shaped condensates. The resulting interference effects are sensitive to the spin polarization properties of the condensate.

Parallel multicomponent interferometer with a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate

Pengju Tang, Peng Peng, Zhihan Li +3 more

Atom interferometry with high visibility is of high demand for precision measurements. Here, a parallel multicomponent interferometer is achieved by preparing a spin-2 Bose-Einstein condensate of $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms confined in a hybrid magneto-optical trap. After the preparation of a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate with spin degrees of freedom entangled, we observe four spatial interference patterns in each run of measurements corresponding to four hyperfine states we mainly populate in the experiment. The atomic populations in different Zeeman sublevels are made controllably using magnetic-field-pulse induced Majorana transitions. The spatial separation of atom cloud in different hyperfine states is reached by Stern-Gerlach momentum splitting. The high visibility of the interference fringes is reached by designing a proper overlap of the interfering wave packets. Due to uncontrollable phase accumulation in Majorana transitions, the phase of each individual spin is found to be subjected to unreproducible shift in multiple experimental runs. However, the relative phase across different spins is stable, paving a way towards noise-resilient multicomponent parallel interferometers.
