Coherent states and holomorphic representations for multilevel atoms

Chang-qi Cao, Fritz Haake

The notion of atomic coherent states is extended to the multilevel case. Since the representation based on coherent states is convenient in treating collective interactions of atoms with photons, and since many optical processes involve atoms of three or more levels, it is expected that this extension will play a role in the theory of such processes as cascade superfluorescence and superradiant lasing. Like their bosonic counterparts, atomic coherent states may be used to define a holomorphic representation for atomic states and operators. We discuss this in detail and give examples to illustrate applications.

Quasi-Probability for Three-Level System and Superradiance

Hiroshi T. ITO

A quasi-probability distribution function based on the coherent state for U(3) is introduced, and its properties are then investigated. With the aid of this function it is shown that the co-operative spontaneous emission from a system of the three-level atoms can be described as a diffusion-like process on C2. In particular, the limit of validity of the semiclassical approach is examined. The case in which the semiclassical approach is not applicable can also be treated approximately by means of the Wiener-Hermite expansion method.

Subradiance and superradiance in V-type three level systems

Eugene K. Bashkirov

The collective spontaneous radiation of the macroscopic system of V-type three-level atoms interacting with quantum electromagnetic field and coherent pumping field has been investigated on the basis of the Bogolubov's method of the elimination ofthe boson variables. The possibility of the subradiant and superradiant regimes in dependence of the pumping area has been established.
