Field correlations in electromagnetically induced transparency

Abstract

The interaction of a bichromatic quantized field with three-level atoms in a $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ configuration is analyzed. We calculate the correlation functions of the field emitted by the atoms when the driven field is in a coherent state. We consider the cases where the atoms are inside and outside a cavity.

Field autocorrelations in electromagnetically induced transparency: Effects of a squeezed probe field

Pablo Barberis-Blostein

The interaction of a quantized field with three-level atoms in a $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ configuration inside a two mode cavity is analyzed. We calculate the stationary quadrature noise spectrum of the field outside the cavity in the case where the input probe field is in a squeezed state and the atoms show electromagnetically induced transparency. If the Rabi frequencies of both dipole transitions of the atoms are different from zero, we show that the output probe field has four maxima of squeezing absorption. We show that in some cases two of these frequencies can be very close to the transition frequency of the atom, in a region where the mean value of the field entering the cavity is hardly altered. Furthermore, part of the absorbed squeezing of the probe field is transferred to the pump field. For some conditions this transfer of squeezing can be complete.

Two-photon detuning and decoherence in cavity electromagnetically induced transparency for quantized fields

Pablo Barberis-Blostein

The interaction of a quantized field with three-level atoms in $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ configuration inside a two-mode cavity is analyzed in the small-noise approximation. The atoms are in a two-photon detuning with respect to the carriers of the field. We calculate the stationary quadrature noise spectrum of the field outside the cavity in the case where the input probe field is a squeezed state and the input pump field is a coherent state. The mean value of the field is unaltered in all the analysis: the atoms shows electromagnetically induced transparency. The effect of the atoms' base level decoherence in the cavity output field is also studied. It is found that the output field is very sensitive to two-photon detuning.

A three-level atom interacting with a single mode cavity field: different configurations

N. H. Abdel-Wahab

In this paper, the problem of a three-level atom interacting with a single mode of the quantized electromagnetic cavity field is considered. The considered theoretical model describes the distinct configurations of a three-level atom. Also, this model includes a detuning and arbitrary forms of both the field and the intensity-dependent atom-field coupling. We obtain the general forms for both the constants of motion and the wavefunction when the atom is initially prepared in one of its states. We use this model for computing a number of statistical aspects of the three-level system. As an illustration, we use the model for studying the time evolution of the second-order correlation function when the atom is initially in an upper state and the field is considered in a coherent state.

Electromagnetically induced transparency and reduced speeds for single photons in a fully quantized model

Thomas Purdy, Martin Ligare

We introduce a simple model for electromagnetically induced transparency in which all fields are treated quantum mechanically. We study a system of three separated atoms at fixed positions in a one-dimensional multimode optical cavity. The first atom serves as the source for a single spontaneously emitted photon; the photon scatters from a three-level Lambda-configuration atom which interacts with a single-mode field coupling two of the atomic levels; the third atom serves as a detector of the total transmitted field. We find an analytical solution for the quantum dynamics. From the quantum amplitude describing the excitation of the detector atom we extract information that provides exact single-photon analogs to wave delays predicted by semi-classical theories. We also find complementary information in the expectation value of the electric field intensity operator.

Opacity of Electromagnetically Induced Transparency for Quantum Fluctuations

Pablo Barberis-Blostein, Marc Bienert

We analyze the propagation of a pair of quantized fields inside a medium of three-level atoms in a Lambda configuration. We calculate the stationary quadrature noise spectrum of the field, in the case where the probe field is in a squeezed state and the atoms show electromagnetically induced transparency. We find an oscillatory transfer of the initial quantum properties between the probe and pump fields which is most strongly pronounced when both fields have comparable intensities. This implies that the quantum state measured after propagation can be completely different from the initial state, even though the mean values of the field are unaltered.

Quantum treatment of cavity-assisted entanglement of three-level atoms and two fields in an electromagnetically-induced-transparency configuration

Xihua Yang, Nicholas R. Brewer, Paul D. Lett

We examine the field-field and field-atom entanglements generated by \ensuremath{\Lambda}-type three-level atoms placed in an optical cavity driven above threshold by two coherent input optical fields. It is shown that under realistic experimental conditions entanglement between the two output cavity fields as well as between the fields and the atoms can be achieved when the two cavity fields are both one- and two-photon (Raman) resonant with the atomic transitions, as in the configuration for electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). The entanglement has similar features to pump-signal-idler three-color entanglement in an above-threshold optical parametric oscillator [Villar et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 140504 (2006)]. This cavity-enhanced atom-field cooperative coupling could enable convenient and efficient generation of bright, nondegenerate, narrow-band entangled fields, which may find potential applications in realistic quantum communications and networking protocols.
