Abstract

This paper presents the analytic solutions of self-induced transparency with transverse variations in resonant media by a self-consistent power series approximation method. We solve the Maxwell-Bloch equations by retaining all integral terms from the inhomogeneous broadening and the second-derivative terms with respect to distance and time. The lowest-order approximation is presented in detail. We discuss the characteristics of the distortionless pulses that propagate in an inhomogeneously broadening medium. It is shown that the group velocity and peak power of the self-induced transparency solitons could be represented in terms of the pulse width, the angle between phase velocity and group velocity, and the basic material parameters of the resonant medium. The chirping of the soliton is also discussed.

Theory of self-induced transparency in a Kerr host medium beyond the slowly-varying-envelope approximation

Sien Chi, Tsun-Yee Wang, Senfar Wen

The self-induced transparency in the Kerr host medium has been studied beyond the slowly-varying-envelope approximation. An analytic solution is obtained. There exists a hyperbolic-secant soliton whose power, pulse width, group velocity, and propagation constant are uniquely determined for given parameters of the medium. The reductions of the group velocities of the solitons by the self-induced-transparency effect in the resonant medium with homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadening are also studied. It is found that there is negative dispersion induced by the self-induced transparency, which is not predicted by the theory with the slowly-varying-envelope approximation. The amount of the induced dispersion is determined by the total dispersion of the system required to be compensated by the Kerr effect. Numerical examples of the self-induced transparency in an erbium-doped fiber are shown. In a typical erbium-doped fiber, the soliton solution has not been found because the inhomogeneous-broadening linewidth of the medium is too large.

Self-induced transparency in the presence of the Kerr nonlinearity

R. Michalska-Trautman

The self-induced transparency solution of the Bloch-Maxwell equations is found in the case of inhomogeneously broadened resonant atomic lines and a host medium with a Kerr-type nonlinearity in the index of refraction. The characteristic feature of the solution is that the atomic functions are not factorized. The time dependence of the pulse phase is different from that in the case of a sharp atomic line. In addition to the known term quadratic in the pulse envelope, it contains a term increasing in time, attaining a maximum at the trailing edge of the pulse, and rapidly decreasing afterwards. The average carrier frequency is proportional to the square of the spectral width of the atomic line divided by the squared width of the pulse. A satisfactory solution is found by modulation of the center of the Lorentz distribution function of the purely resonant solutions. It is shown that in the presence of the inhomogeneous broadening the problem cannot be solved by a linear perturbation expansion with respect to the Kerr constant. This method leads to divergencies near the trailing edge of the pulse.

Optical solitons in dense resonant media

Anatoly A. Afanas'ev, R. A. Vlasov, A. G. Cherstvyi

Exact single-soliton solutions of the modified system of Maxwell-Bloch equations, in which the dipole-dipole interactions of the atoms of a dense resonant medium are taken into account, are obtained. Two propagation regimes are analyzed: “coherent,” where the pulse duration is much shorter than both relaxation times ( T p ≪ T 1 , T 2 ), and “incoherent,” where the pulse duration falls between the relaxation times ( T 2 ≪ T p ≪ T 1 ). It is predicted, for the first time, that soliton propagation of an ultrashort pulse is possible in a dense resonant absorbing medium in an incoherent interaction regime. The differences between the amplitude and phase characteristics of the solitons considered and the corresponding characteristics of the solitons for McCall-Hahn self-induced transparency are noted.

Exact multisoliton solution of the inhomogeneously broadened self-induced transparency equations

P. J. Caudrey, J. Chris Eilbeck, John Gibbon +1 more

An exact solution of the inhomogeneously broadened self-induced transparency equations is given which describes the multiple collision of N solitons with different velocities. The solution is the same as the sharp-line solution except that the amplitude dependent velocity of each soliton has a different functional form. An exact N soliton solution of the form of the broadened Maxwell-Bloch equations valid at low densities is also reported.

Optical Solitons in Media with Resonant and Non-resonant Self-focusing Nonlinearities

Evgeny V. Doktorov, R. A. Vlasov

Special features of generating a self-induced transparency in a medium with both resonant and non-resonant (Kerr-type) nonlinearities are considered. Soliton solutions of the Maxwell-Bloch equations are found, taking into account the diffraction divergence of the light beam. It is shown that solitons emerge in such a medium under conditions of two-dimensional optical beam scanning along the medium surface, and have non-coinciding propagating directions of the amplitude and phase fronts. As a necessary condition for the existence of solitons, there is a definite relationship between the scanning velocity and the parameters of the medium and radiation.

Electromagnetically Induced Transparency and Soliton Propagations

Miki Wadati

One-dimensional pulse propagations in the electromagnetically induced media are studied. The Maxwell–Bloch equations for a three-level medium are simplified with the approximations of slowly varying amplitudes, negligible irreversible relaxations and exact resonances. An analysis is made for the case where the integrable condition is satisfied; the oscillation strengths for the two transitions are equall. Through the Bäcklund transformation, one-soliton solutions including the so-called simulton are derived.
