Abstract

The problem of nonlinear scattering of optical pulses in a dense three-level atomic medium with continuous pumping is considered with allowance for the local field effects. The physical requirements on the parameters of the medium and field are formulated, and the ranges of these parameters for which stationary solitons are effectively formed in the model of a quartz waveguide doped with 87 Rb atoms are determined using variational methods. It is found that disregarding the local field in this model results in violation of soliton stability in the predicted parameter range.

Formation and optical control of dissipative vortex solitons in hollow-core optical fibres filled with a cold atomic gas

We consider the problem of formation of optical vortex solitons in a medium of three-level atoms, taking into account the local field effects. The principal possibility of formation of optical solitons controlled by an optical pump wave under the off-resonance Raman conditions of the lambda-type interaction scheme is predicted in an optically dense medium, i.e., in a hollow-core photonic-crystal optical fibre filled with a gas of cold atoms 87 Rb.

Dissipative solitons in an atomic medium assisted by an incoherent pumping field

Nuno A. Silva, André L. Almeida, Tiago D. Ferreira +1 more

Abstract This work models the propagation of an optical pulse in a four-level atomic system in the electromagnetically induced transparency regime. By demonstrating that linear and nonlinear optical properties can be externally controlled and tailored by a continuous-wave control laser beam and an assisting incoherent pump field, it is shown how these media can provide an excellent framework to experimentally explore pulse dynamics in the presence of non-conservative terms, either gain or loss. Furthermore, we explore the existence of stable dissipative soliton solutions, testing the analytical results with computational simulations of both the effective (1+1)-dimensional model and the full Maxwell–Bloch system of equations.

Exploring dissipative optical solitons controlling gain and loss in atomic systems

Nuno A. Silva, Tiago D. Ferreira, Ariel Guerreiro

Solitons are localized wave solutions that appear in nonlinear systems when self-focusing effects balance the usual pulse dispersion of common optical media. Their stability and particle-like behavior make them ideal candidates for applications that range from communication to optical computing, but in real world physical systems, dissipative processes makes these otherwise stable solutions unstable, and true solitons are particularly hard to observe in systems featuring non-negligible dissipation. In these cases a special type of localized stable solutions, called dissipative solitons, are still possible to obtain, if in addition to a balance between diffraction and nonlinearity, an equilibrium between gain and loss is also present. In this work we discuss theoretically how a 4-level atomic system and an incoherent pumping process can be an ideal experimental testbed for studying this interesting class of solutions, featuring tunable optical properties and controllable gain/loss dynamics that allow to study both classes of temporal and spatial dissipative optical solitons.

Three-Dimensional Dissipative Optical Solitons in a Dielectric Medium with Quantum Dots

Mikhail Yu. Gubin, A. Yu. Leksin, Sergei M Arakelyan +2 more

We consider the problem of formation of three-dimensional spatio-temporal dissipative solitons (laser bullets) in a dense ensemble of two-level quantum dots. The principal possibility of effective laser bullets generation in an all-dielectric metamaterials with quantum dots is shown. The phenomenon arises due to the simultaneous appearance of strong local field effects and significant corrections to diffraction effects during the propagation of short optical pulses in such medium.

Soliton dynamics in a two-level medium with pumping

Alexander A. Zabolotskii

A perturbation theory is developed for a system of evolution equations close to integrable systems in the method of inverse scattering with a spectral parameter depending on variables. This theory is used for analyzing the evolution features for soliton light pulses in a two-level medium with the upper level pumping taking into account linear and nonlinear losses as well as dispersion. Various modes of soliton evolution (including the random mode) in such a system are investigated numerically. It is shown that anomalies in the dependence of soliton parameters on the length of the laser medium appear in the presence of nonuniform broadening in the case when the upper level pumping rate and inverse population losses are functions of detuning. The contribution from the radiative component of the solution is also analyzed taking into account perturbations; it is shown that this contribution can be disregarded in a certain range of parameters.
