Soliton dynamics in a two-level medium with pumping

Abstract

A perturbation theory is developed for a system of evolution equations close to integrable systems in the method of inverse scattering with a spectral parameter depending on variables. This theory is used for analyzing the evolution features for soliton light pulses in a two-level medium with the upper level pumping taking into account linear and nonlinear losses as well as dispersion. Various modes of soliton evolution (including the random mode) in such a system are investigated numerically. It is shown that anomalies in the dependence of soliton parameters on the length of the laser medium appear in the presence of nonuniform broadening in the case when the upper level pumping rate and inverse population losses are functions of detuning. The contribution from the radiative component of the solution is also analyzed taking into account perturbations; it is shown that this contribution can be disregarded in a certain range of parameters.

Effect of perturbations on the soliton evolution in an amplifying medium

Alexander A. Zabolotskii

The laser-medium model that can be reduced to the Maxwell-Bloch equations for a two-level medium with a pumping is considered. The evolution of a soliton in such a medium is studied in the context of a model close to the integrable one with small perturbations and an arbitrary pumping taken into account. Conditions for the quasi-periodic and chaotic dependence of the soliton parameters on the spatial coordinate are found.

Amplification of extremely short pulses in optical media

Alexander A. Zabolotskii

The dynamics of pulses with durations comparable to the inverse transition frequency that propagate in an optical medium is studied in terms of two integrable systems of Maxwell-Bloch equations. The first model describes the field interaction with a nondegenerate medium with a permanent dipole moment and permanent external pumping. A general formula is derived for the N -soliton solution. Particular solutions are used as examples to investigate the effect of permanent dipole moment and pumping on the soliton dynamics. The second model describes the interaction between two-component electric-field pulses and a two-level degenerate medium with permanent upper-level pumping. For different initial magnetic-sublevel populations, soliton solutions are used as examples to show that pumping causes a change in polarization dynamics. A two-soliton solution is used to analyze the interaction of solitons in a two-level medium with external pumping.

Unidirectional optical solitons in a two-level medium

Alexander A. Zabolotskii

Self-induced transparency is analyzed for optical pulses interacting with a two-level system by solving an integrable system of evolution equations without using the slowly varying envelope approximation. A suitable modification of the inverse scattering method is developed to find soliton solutions. The characteristics of linearly and circularly polarized optical solitons (including those created in a laser) are compared. To assess the scope of the two-level model, the effects due to additional levels are analyzed in the adiabatic approximation. It is shown that these effects violate the integrability of the model and lead to loss of self-induced transparency for pulses with duration comparable to oscillation period. However, self-induced transparency is recovered in the quasi-monochromatic limit. Applications of the results are discussed.

Coherent pulse interaction with two-level system embedded in a dispersive medium

Alexander A. Zabolotskii

We present an integrable generalization of the Maxwell-Bloch equations describing electromagnetic-field interaction with a two-level system implemented in a dispersive host medium. Two physical onsets of the model are presented. The technique of the inverse scattering transform for the two sets of physical parameters is used to find soliton solutions. It is found that the model possesses both singular and nonsingular soliton solutions. The application of the results for a lossless nonlinear dispersion management of solitons is discussed.

Analytical theory of the propagation of a dissipative soliton in a nonequilibrium resonant medium

С. В. Сазонов

A nonlinear integrodifferential equation of the ``reaction-diffusion'' type is derived for an optical pulse propagating in a gain resonant two-level medium with the inhomogeneous broadening of the quantum transitions. The stable exact analytical solution of this equation in the form of a dissipative optical soliton with an asymmetric temporal profile is found and analyzed. The temporal duration of this soliton is much longer than the characteristic phase relaxation time but much shorter than the energy relaxation time. It is shown that the formation of such a soliton requires the presence of linear losses, created by the equilibrium part of the medium. It is noted that the found soliton solution qualitatively coincides with the dissipative soliton recently discovered experimentally in a laser microcavity.

Nonlinear amplification in the case of resonant optical pumping of a three-level medium

В. П. Киселев, Vladimir V. Likhanskii, G V Soldak

The results are given of analytic and numerical investigations of the amplification of laser radiation under conditions of strong saturation of resonant transitions induced by optical pumping. Wave-like solutions of propagation of light pulses in a three-level medium are found. Characteristic dependences of the radiation conversion length on the parameters of the radiation and medium are determined.
