Self-action of laser radiation under the conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency

Abstract

The laser-radiation self-action dynamics in the electromagnetically induced transparency band were studied analytically and numerically for an atomic gas with the Λ-type energy-level scheme. The self-consistent system of equations describing the spatiotemporal evolution of a finite-amplitude wave packet in the field of a uniform pump wave was derived. The self-action in the presence of competing diffraction, nonlinear dispersion, and radiation absorption in the system was qualitatively analyzed; in particular, the conditions for self-focusing of a probe beam were determined. The results were confirmed by the numerical simulation of wave-packet spatiotemporal evolution.

Structural features of self-action of laser radiation in the electromagnetic induced transparency mode

N. A. Zharova, Alexander G. Litvak, Vyacheslav A. Mironov

Structural features of the laser radiation self-focusing dynamics in the electromagnetic induced transparency (EIT) band are studied for an atomic system with a Λ-type energy level diagram. Effective nonlinearity of an EIT medium is manifested primarily as nonlinear dispersion (dependence of the group velocity on the wave amplitude). Qualitative analysis of the dynamics of self-action of laser pulses, which is confirmed by numerical simulation, shows that nonlinear evolution of a 3D wave packet follows the scenario of self-focusing, which serves as the background on which the envelope profile turnover and the formation of a shock wave occur at an advanced rate.

Propagation of a laser pulse in a three-level cascade atomic medium under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency

Minh Dong Hoang, Van Doai Le, Ngoc Sau Vu +2 more

We study the propagation dynamics of a single pair of probe and coupling laser pulses in a three-level cascade atomic medium by numerical solving the Maxwell-Bloch equations for atoms and fields. Influences of the pulse durations, intensity and pulse area of the coupling laser on the probe laser propagation are investigated. We found the conditions that the undistorted probe pulse in such i.e., the effect is established. Under conditions, the ground state population is trapped in a dark state. Electromagnetically induced focusing in a Λ-type medium

Gong Shang-Qing, Zhizhan Xu, Pan Shao-hua

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in an inhomogenously broadened medium consisting of Λ-type three-level atoms has been analyzed. It is shown that the Λ system can induce a transparency of the medium when the probe laser and the coupling laser have the same frequency detunings (including zero). Across the EIT window, the radial variation of the strong coupling laser radiation may lead to electromagnetically induced focusing or defocusing of the weak probe laser at separate probe frequency detuning points.

Phase and amplitude near-resonance self-action in periodically modulated laser beams

Vladimir Leonardovich Derbov, Vladislav Viktorovich Serov, Inna L. Plastun +1 more

Full space-time numerical modeling of near-resonance self-action of a beam, whose frequency is harmonically modulated in time, is presented. Maxwell-Bloch equations describing the propagation of the beam through a two-level medium with saturable absorption and refraction are solved using an original stable numerical scheme for multidimensional nonlinear Schrodinger equations. Delayed redistribution of intensity over the beam cross-section due to nonlinear self-focusing and self-phase-modulation effects is shown to affect the phase and the amplitude dynamics of the output signal in a rather nontrivial way, depending on the carrier laser frequency.
