Thermodynamics of Charged Ideal Bose Gases in a Trap under a Magnetic Field

Jing-Han Fan, Qiang Gu, Wei Guo

We investigate thermodynamic properties of the rotating Bose gas in a trap, taking the charged ideal Bose gas in a magnetic field as an example. The system is equivalent to a neutral gas in a synthetic magnetic field. It is indicated that the Bose—Einstein condensation temperature is irrelevant to the magnetic field, conflicting with established intuition that the critical temperature decreases with the field increasing. The specific heat and Landau diamagnetization also exhibit intriguing behaviors.

Charged two-dimensional quantum gas in a uniform magnetic field at finite temperature

Brandon P. van Zyl, David A. W. Hutchinson

We present closed-form, analytical expressions for the thermodynamic properties of an ideal, two-dimensional (2D) charged Fermi or Bose gas in the presence of a uniform magnetic field of arbitrary strength. We consider both the homogeneous quantum gas (in which case our expressions are exact) and the inhomogeneous gas within the local-density approximation. Our results for the Fermi gas are relevant to the current-density-functional theory of low-dimensional electronic systems in magnetic fields. For a 2D charged Bose gas (CBG) in a homogeneous magnetic field, we show that the uniform system undergoes a sharp transition at a critical temperature ${T}_{c}^{\ensuremath{\star}},$ below which there is a macroscopic occupation of the lowest Landau level. An examination of the one-body density matrix, however, reveals the absence of long-range order, thereby indicating that the transition cannot be interpreted to a Bose-Einstein condensate. Nevertheless, for $T<{T}_{c}^{\ensuremath{\star}}$ and weak magnetic fields, the system still exhibits magnetic properties which are practically indistinguishable from those of a condensed, superconducting CBG. We therefore conclude that while a condensate is a sufficient condition for the ideal CBG to exhibit a superconducting state, it may not be a necessary condition.

Path-integral treatment of charged Bose polarons

Laurent H. A. Simons, Michiel Wouters, Jacques Tempere

The system of a charged impurity in an interacting Bose gas has gained significant attention due to the long-range ion-atom interactions and the study of transport properties. Here, the ground state energy of a charged Bose polaron is calculated within the Bogoliubov approximation for both the Fröhlich and beyond-Fröhlich Hamiltonians using a generalized Feynman variational path-integral approach, which obtained accurate results for other polaron problems. The generalized approach, which was used to improve the energy result for the neutral polaron, has resulted in a minor improvement, indicating that Feynman's approach is sufficient when the impurity-boson interaction is long-range. Beyond-Fröhlich corrections results in the emergence of a divergence in the polaronic energy indicating a transition between the repulsive and attractive polaron regime. The path-integral approach with the beyond-Fröhlich Hamiltonian is also compared to a field-theory calculation from Christensen et al, 2021. The validity of the Bogoliubov approximation is investigated. The optical absorption has also been calculated within the Bogoliubov approximation for weak ion-atom interactions, and the effect of finite temperature has been studied. We show that the coupling of the ion to an oscillating external electric field offers a straigtforward experimental probe for the charged polaron in a Bose gas, different from but complementary to existing spectroscopic techniques.
