Thermodynamics of Charged Ideal Bose Gases in a Trap under a Magnetic Field

Abstract

We investigate thermodynamic properties of the rotating Bose gas in a trap, taking the charged ideal Bose gas in a magnetic field as an example. The system is equivalent to a neutral gas in a synthetic magnetic field. It is indicated that the Bose—Einstein condensation temperature is irrelevant to the magnetic field, conflicting with established intuition that the critical temperature decreases with the field increasing. The specific heat and Landau diamagnetization also exhibit intriguing behaviors.

Thermodynamic properties of charged ideal spin-1 bosons in a trap under a magnetic field

Yushan Li

Thermodynamics of trapped charged ideal spin-1 bosons confined in a magnetic field are investigated within semi-classical approximation and truncated-summation approach. It is shown that the critical temperature increases slightly at the first, and then decreases slowly with increasing external magnetic field. Charged spin-1 Bose gases present a crossover from diamagnetism to paramagnetism as the spin factor increases. Charged spin-1 Bose gases exhibit distinct thermodynamic behaviors from the spinless case.

Effects of a finite number of particles on the thermodynamic properties of a harmonically trapped ideal charged Bose gas in a constant magnetic field

Duan-Liang Xiao, Meng-Yun Lai, Xiao‐Yin Pan

We investigate the thermodynamic properties of an ideal charged Bose gas confined in an anisotropic harmonic potential and a constant magnetic field. Using an accurate density of states, we calculate analytically the thermodynamic potential and consequently various intriguing thermodynamic properties, including the Bose–Einstein transition temperature, the specific heat, magnetization, and the corrections to these quantities due to the finite number of particles are also given explicitly. In contrast to the infinite number of particles scenarios, we show that those thermodynamic properties, particularly the Bose–Einstein transition temperature depends upon the strength of the magnetic field due to the finiteness of the particle numbers, and the collective effects of a finite number of particles become larger when the particle number decreases. Moreover, the magnetization varies with the temperature due to the finiteness of the particle number while it keeps invariant in the thermodynamic limit N → ∞ .

Phase transition in the magnetic field in a Bose gas

Yu. M. Poluéktov, A. G. Volosnev

The thermodynamic properties of a Bose gas of particles with nonzero spin and magnetic moment in states with and without a Bose-Einstein condensate are studied as a function of the external magnetic field. It is shown that there exists a temperature interval where a transition into a state with a Bose-Einstein condensate occurs in a Bose gas with constant temperature and particle number density when the magnetic field is increasing and reaches a critical magnitude. The temperature and magnetic field derivatives of the specific heat at constant volume and the magnetic susceptibility undergo a jump at such a transition.

Exploring the thermodynamics of spin-1 Bose gases with synthetic magnetization

Daniel Benedicto Orenes, Anna Kowalczyk, Emilia Witkowska +1 more

We study the thermodynamic properties of a spin-1 Bose gas across the Bose–Einstein condensation transition. We present the theoretical description of the thermodynamics of a trapped ideal spin-1 Bose gas and we describe the phases that can be obtained in this system as a function of the temperature and of the populations in the different spin components. We propose a simple way to realize a 'synthetic magnetization' that can be used to probe the entire phase diagram while keeping the real magnetization of the system fixed. We experimentally demonstrate the use of such method to explore different phases in a sample with zero total magnetization. Our work opens up new perspectives to study isothermal quenching dynamics through different magnetic phases in spinor condensates.

Diamagnetism of quasi-2D “charged” Bose gases under confinements

Anani Koffi Ayèlété Djaglo, Qiang Gu

A charged Bose gas under confinements ensures a phase transition, in contrast with the homogeneous system in an external magnetic field. The present investigation concerns charged Bose gases trapped in a two-dimensional potential as well as neutral Bose gases rotating around the z axis. It is found that the systems exhibit quite different magnetic properties. A diamagnetization is determined in the charged system while the rotating system shows up an uncommon magnetic response. However, both models possess finite magnetic susceptibilities at vanishing field or at stopping rotation.

Synthetically-charged Bose gas in the fast rotating regime

H. Abdulghani, A. H. Abbas, Ali Yehia Ellithi +2 more

Abstract We address the thermodynamic properties of a rotating Bose gas in a 3D space in the rapid rotation regime. In such a rotation regime, the 3D system has the shape of a flat pancake and shows exotic features that can never be found in the original system. Using the semi-classical approximation, the temperature dependence of the magnetization of rotating Bose gas is investigated. In the degenerate limit, the system does not show a Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) phase transition at a definite transition temperature. However, it exhibits a large Landau diamagnetism at low temperatures, which diminishes as the speed of rotation decreases. Our findings are compared with the previous results.
