Abstract

We developed a system to investigate resonant nonlinear optical interactions in acetylene molecules, confined in a hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (HC-PCF), using light injection through a low-loss splice from one end of the fiber, allowing us to work at low power. Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) was observed in the 1500 nm telecommunications window.

ABSTRACT We developed an experimental setup for electromagnetically induced transparency able to manufacture microcells, suitable for optical fiber communications technology. A hollow‐core photonic crystal fiber (HC‐PCF) is filled with acetylene, to work in the 1500 nm telecommunications window. We used a HC‐PCF with the mode‐field diameter compatible with standard single‐mode fibers, with the purpose of achieving low‐loss splicing and enabling us to work at low pumping powers. This allows to induce a narrow transparency window, which can be spectrally adjusted and dynamically controlled. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 57:348–352, 2015

Electromagnetically-induced transparency grid in acetylene-filled hollow-core PCF

We report a set of experimental observations on electromagnetically induced transparency in acetylene filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber, involving both Lambda-type and V-type interactions over several lines of the R-branch of the nu1 + nu3 ro-vibrational overtone band. Transparency as high as ~70% was achieved. A theoretical account of the sources of decoherence shows that collisions with the inner wall of the fiber core and laser frequency-jitter dominate the coherence decay.

Resonant Optical Interactions with Molecules Confined in Photonic Band-Gap Fibers

We investigate resonant nonlinear optical interactions and demonstrate induced transparency in acetylene molecules in a hollow-core photonic-band-gap fiber at 1.5 mum. The induced spectral transmission window is used to demonstrate slow-light effects, and we show that the observed broadening of the spectral features is due to collisions of the molecules with the inner walls of the fiber core. Our results illustrate that such fibers can be used to facilitate strong coherent light-matter interactions even when the optical response of the individual molecules is weak.

Transient quantum coherent effects in the acetylene-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber

Low-pressure acetylene in the hollow-core photonic crystal structure fibers is an excellent medium for the room-temperature investigation of the coherent quantum effects in communication wavelength region. Pulsed excitation enables observation of new coherent phenomena like optical nutation or photon echo and evaluation of important temporal characteristics of the light-molecule interactions. We also report original experimental results on the pulsed excitation of the electromagnetically induced transparency in co- and counter-propagation configurations.
