Abstract

The dependence of stochastic processes in fiber optical information systems on radiation polarization modes, anisotropy parameters, and optical fiber nonlinearity is investigated. The polarization-statistical properties determined for signals in optical-fiber information systems make it possible to simulate new method for controlling quantum amplitudes and phase fluctuations of photons, which must increase the information efficiency of optical communication channels.

Quantum Stochasticity in the Stokes Parameters of Light, Polarization, Switching and Procedure of Nondemolition Measurements of Distributed Feedback Systems

A. P. Alodjants, A. Yu. Leksin, Sergei M Arakelyan

The analysis of formation of chaotic quantum states for two (or four) orthogonally polarized modes in a tunnelly-coupled optical fiber (TCOF) has been carried out. A special attention is devoted both to the structure of arising polarization instabilities and to the possibility to control of such a quantum state by procedure of quantum nondemolition measurements. New effect of polarization switching is obtained. A new method of generating correlated fluctuations in optical field, based on Raman-Nath diffraction by a fine grating, is discussed. A nonclassical effect is predicted: a suppression of quantum fluctuations below the level of full coherence in the sum of difference photon numbers for the transmitted and scattered waves. The physics of this phenomenon involves a correlation of quantum fluctuations in the intensities of two modes that are coupled nonlinearly. This correlation is most effective in the limit of parametric interaction between the waves in the medium.

Analysis of polarization mode dispersion effect on quantum state decoherence in fiber-based optical quantum communication

Shamsolah Salemian, Shahram Mohammadnejad

The implementation of quantum communication protocols in long optical fibers is limited by several decoherence mechanisms. In this contribution we review this mechanisms and analysis their effect on the quantum states. Because of asymmetry in the real fibers, the two orthogonal polarization modes are propagated at different phase and group velocities. The difference in group velocities results in Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD). It is created by random fluctuations of the residual birefringence in optical fibers, such that the State of Polarization (SOP) of an optical signal will turn randomly over time, in an unpredictable way. In optical quantum communication, quantum state measurement is necessary. The bottleneck for communication between far apart nodes is the increasing of the error probability with the length of the channel connecting the nodes. For an optical fiber, the value of absorption and depolarization of a photon (i.e., the qubit) increases exponentially with the length of the fiber.

Polarization State Dynamics of Single Photon Pulse Under Stochastic Polarization Mode Dispersion for Optical Fiber Quantum Channels

Changhua Zhu, Changxing Pei, Dongxiao Quan +2 more

We investigate the polarization state dynamics of single photon pulse for optical fiber quantum communication channels. On the basis of a birefringence vector model in which amplitude and direction are both stochastic variables, Jones vector is obtained by solving the frequency domain wave equation. The fidelity of output quantum state and degree of polarization of the pulse are also obtained from the density operators. It is shown that the fidelity of quantum state decreases quickly and tends to a stable value along optical fiber, and increases for larger mean fluctuation magnitude of the stochastic fiber birefringence. Degree of polarization is nearly constant for small mean fluctuation magnitude of the birefringence. The fidelity and degree of polarization vary in the same way for Gaussian and rectangular frequency spectrum envelope, while the value of Lorentzian spectrum is smaller.

Hamiltonian of photons in a single-mode optical fiber for quantum communications protocols

George P. Miroshnichenko

A phenomenological Hamiltonian of photons in a single-mode stochastic inhomogeneous optical fiber (OF) is derived. Quantization of radiation is performed in the basis of an ideal OF with proper calibration that ensures transversality of the electric-field-displacement vector. Stochastic parameters of the Hamiltonian are determined by using the reciprocal tensor of the dielectric permittivity averaged over the OF segment volume. The Hamiltonian is parametrized by three phenomenological parameters and preserves the number of photons. It is assumed that the segment of the OF is divided into random subsegments with optical parameters defined by the Wiener process with respect to the longitudinal coordinate. The temporal dynamics of the single-photon density matrix is analyzed in the basis of states with orthogonal polarizations. The relative quantum beat error rate in the sifted quantum key distributed according to the BB84 protocol with polarization coding of information averaged over the scatter of the OF parameters is calculated.

DATA THroughput OF OPTIC FIBERin quantum communications system

Иван Романович Гулаков, A. O. Zenevich, A. M. Timofeev

A mathematical model of communications channel that transfers data by means of separate photons having different polarization has been developed. The expression for calculating of optic fiber throughput has been obtained that takes into account probabilities of depolarization and absorption of radiation photon. As a result of implemented simulation it has been found that data throughput depends on the length of optic fiber. It has been established that photon absorption as compared with its depolarization contributes greatly to the size of optic fiber throughput.
