Abstract

We study the square-lattice Ising model with nearest-neighbor ( J 1 ) and next nearest-neighbor ( J 2 ) interactions, using the Wang–Landau Monte Carlo algorithm and the partition function zeros in the complex temperature plane (Fisher zeros). Here, the competition between J 1 and J 2 interactions is defined by the coupling ratio R = J 2 / J 1 . For J 2 > 0, the critical behavior is trivial and is the same as the square-lattice Ising model with only J 1 interaction. On the other hand, the new phase of superantiferromagnet appears for J 2 < 0. However, the nature of the transition into the superantiferromagnetic phase is still controversial in the literature. To resolve the controversy, we estimate the critical temperature T c ( R ) and thermal scaling exponent y t ( R ) from the Fisher zeros, as a function of R . The estimated values of T c ( R ) agree well with the results in the literature. We obtain the simple critical behavior with a fixed value of the thermal scaling exponent, y t ( R ) = 1, for and J 2 < 0 (Ising antiferromagnet). For and J 2 < 0 (Ising superantiferromagnet), however, it is shown that y t ( R ) continuously varies depending on R values, and the estimated values of y t ( R ) are clearly less than that of the first-order phase transition, y t = 2.

Partition function zeros of the square-lattice Ising model with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor interactions

Seung‐Yeon Kim

The distributions of the partition function zeros in the complex a=e2betaJ1 plane of the square-lattice Ising model with nearest-neighbor (J1) and next-nearest-neighbor (J2) interactions are investigated as a function of R=J2/J1. Starting from the well-known two-circle distribution of the zeros a=+/-1+sqrt[2]eitheta for R=0 , finally the partition function zeros lie on the unit circle a=eitheta for R=infinity . Between these two ends, the changes in the zero distributions are described. Using the partition function zeros, the critical point ac(R) and the thermal scaling exponent yt(R) are estimated for the Ising ferromagnet (equivalently, antiferromagnet) and superantiferromagnet. For the special case of R=1/2 , the possible implications of the zero distributions are also discussed.

Wang–Landau study of the random bond square Ising model with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor interactions

Nikolaos G. Fytas, Anastasios Malakis, Ioannis Georgiou

We report results from a Wang–Landau study of the random bond square Ising model with nearest-neighbor ( J nn ) and next-nearest-neighbor ( J nnn ) antiferromagnetic interactions. We consider the case R = J nn / J nnn = 1 for which the competitive nature of interactions produces a sublattice ordering known as superantiferromagnetism and the pure system undergoes a second-order transition with a positive specific heat exponent α. For a particular disorder strength we study the effects of bond randomness and we find that, while the critical exponents of the correlation length ν, magnetization β, and magnetic susceptibility γ increase as compared to the pure model, the ratios β/ν and γ/ν remain unchanged. Thus, the disordered system obeys weak universality and hyperscaling similarly to other two-dimensional disordered systems. However, the specific heat exhibits an unusually strong saturating behavior which distinguishes the present case of competing interactions from other two-dimensional random bond systems studied previously.

Critical properties of an antiferromagnetic Ising model on a square lattice with interactions of the next-to-nearest neighbors

Akai Kurbanovich Murtazaev, Рамазанов Магомедшейх Курбанович, М. К. Бадиев

The critical properties of an antiferromagnetic Ising model on a square lattice with interactions of the next-to-nearest neighbors are investigated by a replica Monte-Carlo method. Using the finite-size scaling theory the static critical exponents of specific heat, ordering parameter, susceptibility, correlation radius as well as the Fisher exponent are calculated. An analysis of data is performed both with and without taking into account a correction to the finite-size scaling. It was found that in the model under consideration the second order phase transition is observed. It is shown that this model belongs to the new class of universality of critical behavior.

Phase transitions and critical characteristics in the layered antiferromagnetic Ising model with next-nearest-neighbor intralayer interactions

Рамазанов Магомедшейх Курбанович, Akai Kurbanovich Murtazaev

Phase transitions and critical characteristics of the layered antiferromagnetic Ising model in the case of a cubic lattice with next-nearest-neighbor intralayer interactions are studied in the framework of the Monte Carlo method implementing the replica algorithm. The characteristics of the phase transitions are analyzed within the histogram method and with the Binder cumulants. For the model under study, it is found that the transition from the superantiferromagnetic phase to the paramagnetic one is a second order phase transition. The static critical exponents for the specific heat α, susceptibility γ, order parameter β, correlation radius ν, and the Fisher exponent η are calculated using the finite-size scaling theory. It is shown that the three-dimensional Ising model for the cubic lattice with next-nearest-neighbor interactions belongs to the same universality class of critical behavior as the completely frustrated three-dimensional Ising model.

Phase transitions in the two-dimensional superantiferromagnetic Ising model with next-nearest-neighbor interactions

A. Saguia, B. Boechat, J. Florencio +1 more

We use Monte Carlo and transfer matrix methods in combination with extrapolation schemes to determine the phase diagram of the two-dimensional superantiferromagnetic (SAF) Ising model with next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) interactions in a magnetic field. The interactions between nearest-neighbor (NN) spins are ferromagnetic along x, and antiferromagnetic along Y. We find that for sufficiently low temperatures and fields, there exists a region limited by a critical line of second-order transitions separating a SAF phase from a magnetically induced paramagnetic phase. We did not find any region with either first-order transition or with reentrant behavior. The NNN couplings produce either an expansion or a contraction of the SAF phase. Expansion occurs when the interactions are antiferromagnetic, and contraction when they are ferromagnetic. There is a critical ratio R(c)=1/2 between NNN and NN couplings, beyond which the SAF phase no longer exists.

Phase transitions in the antiferromagnetic ising model on a square lattice with next-nearest-neighbor interactions

Akai Kurbanovich Murtazaev, Рамазанов Магомедшейх Курбанович, Felix A. Kassan-Ogly +1 more

The phase transitions in the two-dimensional Ising model on a square lattice are studied using a replica algorithm, the Monte Carlo method, and histogram analysis with allowance for the next-nearest-neighbor interactions in the range 0.1 ≤ r < 1.0. A phase diagram is constructed for the dependence of the critical temperature on the next-nearest-neighbor interaction. A second-order phase transition is detected in this range and the model under study.
