Abstract

We build a Zeeman slower with consecutive coils and use it to load an Yb magneto-optical trap (MOTs).Cooling efficiency is measured by the fluorescence intensity of the atomic cloud trapped by the MOT.An optimized magnetic field profile can acquire the maximum cooling efficiency, corresponding to a good compromise between the smaller magnetic field mismatch and the high capture velocity. Our studies provide useful information on how the performance of the Zeeman slower can be improved.

A dual species MOT of Yb and Cs

Kirsteen Louisa Butler

This thesis describes the design and construction of a new apparatus to laser cool and trap Yb and Cs atoms with the ultimate aim of creating ultracold molecules with both an electric and magnetic dipole moment, which are of great interest in a range of fields. The Yb and Cs atomic beams are first generated and overlapped in a dual species oven. A collimated atomic beam of the two species is formed by the use of an array of capillary tubes at the exit of the oven. At this stage the atoms have an average velocity of 311m/s or 264m/s for Yb and Cs respectively, therefore it is necessary to reduce their velocity before they can be trapped in a magneto-optical trap (MOT). This initial stage of slowing is carried out with a Zeeman slower. Due to their atomic properties, Yb and Cs atoms are unable to be slowed by the same magnetic field profile therefore they cannot be loaded simultaneously, however, the Zeeman slower can load the atoms into a MOT sequentially. Once their velocities have been reduced to approximately 48m/s (10m/s) the Cs (Yb) atoms can be captured in a MOT. The laser systems for cooling Yb and Cs are also presented. Laser cooling of Cs is achieved on the D2 transition at 852.3nm whereas Yb can either be cooled on the 1S0 to 1P1 or 1S0 to 3P1 transitions at 398.9nm or 555.8nm respectively. Due to the relative linewidths of these transitions (2π×28.0MHz and 2π × 182.2kHz), Zeeman slowing is performed for Yb on the 1S0 to 1P1 transition and magneto-optical trapping on the 1S0 to 3P1 transition. A Cs MOT with 1 × 10^8 atoms and an Yb MOT with the order of 10^8 atoms on the narrow 556nm transition are demonstrated. The mixture can be sequentially loaded into a dual species MOT, paving the way for many further experiments exploring this novel mixture.

Theoretical and Experimental Study of Rising Zeeman Slower Efficiency use compensatory Coils

Hong Chang

We present a Zeeman Slower used for strontium optical clock.Adding compensatory coil can increase slower actual distance and ultimate magnetic field gradient, thus increasing captured atom number in Strontium first cooling stage(blue MOT).Theoretical analysis Zeeman slower constructed in new method can trapping 31.17% more atoms than made by a single set of coil.We measured the velocity distribution of atomic beam use time-of-flight method. The most probable velocity decreased from 380m/s to 43m/s,the width also become narrower.Experiment study show that two coils Zeeman slower can trap 1.81×10688Sr atoms in first cooling stage. While single coil Zeeman slower can trap 1.26×106 atoms in same experimental condition. Therefore adding compensatory coils increase trapping atom number by 30.4%,consistent with the theoretical analysis.

Zeeman slowing atoms using the magnetic field from a magneto-optical trap

Wen Yan, Yuan Yao, Yuxin Sun +3 more

We study a Zeeman slower using the magnetic field generated by a pair of coils for a magneto-optical trap. The efficiency of the Zeeman slower is shown to be dependent on the intensity and frequency detuning of the laser light for slowing the atoms. With the help of numerical analysis, optimal experimental parameters are explored. Experimentally, the optimal frequency detuning and intensity of the slowing beam are explored, and 4 × 107 ytterbium atoms are trapped in the magneto-optical trap.

Direct loading of a large Yb MOT on the 1 S 0 → 3 P 1 transition

Alexander Guttridge, S. A. Hopkins, S. L. Kemp +6 more

Abstract We report a robust technique for laser frequency stabilisation that enables the reproducible loading of in excess of 10 9 Yb atoms from a Zeeman slower directly into a magneto-optical trap (MOT) operating on the 1 S 0 → 3 P 1 transition, without the need for a first stage MOT on the 1 S 0 → 1 P 1 transition. We use a simple atomic beam apparatus to generate narrow fluorescence signals on both the 399 nm 1 S 0 → 1 P 1 transition used for the Zeeman slower and the 556 nm 1 S 0 → 3 P 1 transition. We present in detail the methods for obtaining spectra with a high signal-to-noise ratio and demonstrate error signals suitable for robust frequency stabilisation. Finally we demonstrate the stability and precision of our technique through sensitive measurements of the gravitational sag of the Yb MOT as a function of the intensity of the laser cooling beams, which are in good agreement with theory. These results will be important for efficient loading of the atoms into an optical dipole trap.

Simultaneous magneto-optical trapping of Ytterbium and Caesium

R. Freytag

This thesis presents progress toward the production of ultracold CsYb molecules. To this end, an apparatus capable of producing magneto optical traps of Yb and Cs was designed, built and tested. Both atoms are produced in a dual species oven and both slowed to low speeds by a single Zeeman slower. From the Zeeman slower atoms are captured in a dual-species magneto-optical trap. To cool caesium the 852 nm D2 transition is addressed by two lasers for cooling and repump. For ytterbium the 399 nm 1S0 ⇒ 1P1 transition is addressed for the Zeeman slower and the 556 nm 1S0 ⇒ 3P1 transition is addressed for the magneto-optical trap. The 399 nm light is produced by two homebuilt diode lasers in an injection-seeding setup, which can produce up to 100 mW. The 556 nm light is produced from a commercial frequency doubled fiber laser, which can produce up to 260 mW. The Zeeman slower is characterised experimentally for both Cs and Yb, and the results compared to those of a numerical simulation of the slower for Yb. The velocity distribution exiting the slower is very sensitive to the exact magnetic field profile, the laser power and detuning of the laser light. The number of atoms loaded into the magneto-optical trap was investigated as a function of the magnetic field gradient, the laser power and the laser detuning. The capture velocity of the Yb MOT is small because the linewidth of the MOT transition is narrow, and so we investigated the influence of broadening the laser linewidth by adding multiple finely-spaced sidebands to the laser light. After optimisation the caesium MOT trapped 5.5 ×10^8 atoms at 125 ± 4 μK. The ytterbium MOT trapped 4.7 ×10^9 atoms at 81 ± 2 μK. Lastly we demonstrate that both MOTs can be produced in the same vacuum chamber simultaneously.
