Comment on ‘‘Hydrogen atom in one dimension’’

H. N. Núñez‐Yépez, Carlos Alejandro Vargas, A. L. Salas Brito

In a recent paper Boya, Kmiecik, and Bohm [Phys. Rev. A 37, 3567 (1988)] discuss the one-dimensional hydrogen atom and mention what one should take if one wants to form parity eigenfunctions. In this Comment we show that such even and odd superpositions cannot represent physical states due to a superselection rule that leads to spontaneous breaking of the symmetry of inversion through the origin.

Violation of Bell's inequality in the presence of superselection rules

Superselection rules (SSRs) constrain the allowable physical operations and consequently the ability to observe violations of local realism. Not only do SSRs restrict the type of states which can be prepared, equally they restrict the reference frames which are necessary for measurements. Here, we derive quantitative conditions under which a Bell inequality is violated in the presence of SSRs which reveal the critical role of reference frames. In particular, references prepared only locally in accordance with SSRs cannot be used to violate a Bell inequality. We discuss the optimal reference frames, their minimal size and reusability. Finally we comment on experiments related to Bell inequality and single photon non-locality, and propose a new experiment showing violation under an induced SSR. ‡ Corresponding author. ar X iv :1 00 4. 51 84 v2 [ qu an tph ] 1 6 Ju n 20 10 Violation of Bell’s inequality in the presence of superselection rules 2

Superselection Rules

K. Kong Wan

For orthodox quantum systems, pure states correspond one-to-one to all one-dimensional subspaces and observables correspond one-to-one to all selfadjoint operators in the state space. A relaxation of this one-to-one correspondence will bring about superselection rules. A general formulation of superselection rules is technically complicated. 1 We shall adopt an intuitive approach here and limit our discussion to some special cases to see how superselection rules can be incorporated in a Hilbert space structure of quantum theory.
