Abstract

Multimode triggered optical superradiance due to a two-photon transition is theoretically studied. Kinetic equations are derived for the dynamics of cooperative development of coherence and population inversion of optical centers interacting with each other through a common field of emitted photons. Various regimes of triggering of optical superradiance due to a two-photon transition are considered. The possibility of creating a quantum photomultiplier on the basis of the triggered optical superradiance is discussed.

Multipulse excitation of optical superradiance in multilevel systems

Alexei A. Kalachev, Самарцев Виталий Владимирович

The multipulse regime of excitation of optical superradiance in both two- and multilevel systems is theoretically investigated. It is demonstrated that this regime is the generalization of the triggering regime of superradiance excitation. The possibilities of information processing and laser cooling of solids under this superradiant regime are discussed.

Amplification of nonclassical states of light under triggered superradiance regime

Alexei A. Kalachev, Самарцев Виталий Владимирович

The possibility of amplification of pulses of squeezed light in the regime of triggered optical superradiance is analyzed. The kinetic equations are obtained which describe the dynamics of cooperative development of the population inversion and dispersion of the quadrature components of polarization of optical centers interacting with the triggering-pulse field in the squeezed vacuum state. The dependence of the squeezing degree of the superradiance field on the squeezing degrees of the triggering-pulse field and polarization of an amplifying medium is determined. It is shown that in the case of a sufficiently strong squeezing of the medium, the intensity of the squeezed quadrature component of the superradiance signal is lower than that of an incoherent spontaneous background. Therefore, the superradiance field can be characterized not only by a classical squeezing (when the dispersions of quadratures are not identical) but also by a quantum squeezing (when the dispersion of one quadrature is smaller than its vacuum value).

Triggering optical superradiance, which allows a control of spontaneous emission with the use of an injection optical pulse, is considered. The multipulse regime of excitation of optical superradiance and the long-lived optical superradiance are analyzed as the generalizations of the triggering regime of superradiance excitation.

Dynamics of two-photon paired superradiance

M. Yoshimura, N. Sasao, Minoru Tanaka

We develop for dipole-forbidden transition a dynamical theory of two-photon paired superradiance (PSR). This is a cooperative process characterized by two photons emitted back to back with equal energies. By irradiating the trigger laser from two target ends, with its frequency tuned at the half energy between two levels, a macroscopically coherent state of medium and fields dynamically emerges as time evolves, and a large signal of amplified output occurs with a time delay. The basic semiclassical equations in $1+1$ space-time dimensions are derived for the field-plus-medium system to describe the space-time evolution of the entire system and are numerically solved to demonstrate the existence of both explosive and weak PSR phenomena in the presence of relaxation terms. The explosive PSR event terminates accompanying a sudden release of most of the energy stored in the target. Our numerical simulations are performed using the vibrational transition ${X}^{1}{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}_{g}^{+}v=1\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$ of a para-H${}_{2}$ molecule and taking many different excited atom number densities and different initial coherences between the metastable and the ground states. In an example with a number density close to $O({10}^{21}$ cm${}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$) and a high initial coherence, the explosive event terminates several nanoseconds after the trigger irradiation, when the phase relaxation time larger than $O$(10 ns) is taken. After PSR events the system is expected to follow a steady-state solution which is obtained by analytic means and is made of many objects of field condensates endowed with a topological stability.

Dynamics of quantum dot superradiance

Vyacheslav I. Yukalov, Elizaveta P. Yukalova

The possibility of realizing the superradiant regime of electromagnetic emission by the assembly of quantum dots is considered. The overall dynamical process is analyzed in detail. It is shown that there can occur several qualitatively different stages of evolution. The process starts with dipolar waves triggering the spontaneous radiation of individual dots. This corresponds to the fluctuation stage, when the dots are not yet noticeably correlated with each other. The second is the quantum stage, when the dot interactions through the common radiation field become more important, but the coherence is not yet developed. The third is the coherent stage, when the dots radiate coherently, emitting a superradiant pulse. After the superradiant pulse, the system of dots relaxes to an incoherent state in the relaxation stage. If there is no external permanent pumping, or the effective dot interactions are weak, the system tends to a stationary state during the last stationary stage, when coherence dies out to a low, practically negligible, level. In the case of permanent pumping, there exists the sixth stage of pulsing superradiance, when the system of dots emits separate coherent pulses.
