Abstract

We discuss the transport properties of a single photon in a onedimensional waveguide with an embedded three-level atom and utilize both stationary plane-wave solutions and time-dependent transport calculations to investigate the interaction of a photon with driven and undriven V-and -systems.Specifically, for the case of an undriven V-system, we analyze the phenomenon of long-time occupation of the upper atomic levels in conjunction with almost dark states. For the undriven -system, we find non-stationary dark states and we explain how the photon's transmittance can be controlled by an initial phase difference between the energetically lower-lying atomic states. With regard to the driven three-level systems, we discuss electromagnetically induced transparency in terms of the pulse propagation of a single photon through a -type atom.In addition, we demonstrate how a driven V-type atom can be utilized to control the momentum distribution of the scattered photon.

Photon transport in one-dimensional systems coupled to three-level quantum impurities

Christoph Martens, Paolo Longo, Kurt Busch

We discuss a model for single-photon scattering in a tight-binding waveguide with an embedded three-level quantum impurity. To this end, we calculate stationary scattering solutions of plane wave states and compare the results with non-stationary numerical simulations of single-photon pulses. Using the example of a driven Λ-three-level system we show how numerical investigations can lead to a more realistic picture at extremal scattering conditions.

Single-photon Transport in a Waveguide-cavity-emitter System

Xue-jian Sun, WenXiao Liu, Hao Chen +3 more

Abstract We investigate the single-photon transport properties in a hybrid waveguide quantum electrodynamics system, in which a one-dimensional waveguide is simultaneously coupled to a cavity and a driven Λ-type three-level atom. The cavity and the atom are also coupled to each other. We show that when the waveguide is coupled to the cavity and the atom at the same point, double electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) can be observed from the system. The physical mechanism of the double EIT effect has been given by setting up the eigenstate structure for the whole system. When the waveguide is coupled to the cavity and the atom at different points, we demonstrate that the single-photon transmission spectra can be effectively controlled by adjusting the relative separation between the cavity and the atom. Moreover, this non-zero relative separation can lead to the occurrence of the controllable nonreciprocal scattering effect. These results have potential applications in realization of photonic coherent control.

Controllable single-photon transport in an optical waveguide coupled to an optomechanical cavity with a V-type three-level atom

Yuqing Zhang Yuqing Zhang, Zhong-Hua Zhu, Zhaohui Peng +3 more

An optomechanical cavity embedded with a V-type three-level atom is exploited to control single-photon transport in a one-dimensional waveguide. The effects of the atom-cavity detuning, the optomechanical effect, the coupling strengths between the cavity and the atom or the waveguide, and the atomic dissipation on the single-photon transport properties are analyzed systematically. Interestingly, the single-photon transmission spectra show multiple double electromagnetically induced transparency. Moreover, the double electromagnetically induced transparency can be switched to a single one by tuning the atom-cavity detuning. © 2018 Chinese Optics Letters.

Controlling Single-Photon Transport along an Optical Waveguide by using a Three-Level Atom

Wei Tian, Bin Chen, XU Wei-dong

We theoretically investigate the single-photon transport properties in an optical waveguide embedded with a V-type three-level atom (VTLA) based on symmetric and asymmetric couplings between the photon and the VTLA. Our numerical results show that the transmission spectrum of the incident photon can be well controlled by virtue of both symmetric and asymmetric coupling interactions. A multifrequency photon attenuator is realized by controlling the asymmetric coupling interactions. Furthermore, the influences of dissipation of the VTLA for the realistic physical system on single-photon transport properties are also analyzed.

Controlling single-photon transport in an optical waveguide coupled to an optomechanical cavity with a Λ-type three-level atom

Abstract We theoretically study the single-photon transport along a one-dimensional optical waveguide coupled to an optomechanical cavity containing a Λ-type three-level atom. Our numerical results show that the transmission spectra of the incident photon can be well controlled by such a hybrid atom-optomechanical system. The effects of the optomechanical coupling strength, the classical laser beam applied to the atom, atom-cavity detuning, and atomic dissipation on the single-photon transport properties are analyzed. It is of particular interest that an analogous double electromagnetically induced transparency emerges in the single-photon transmission spectra.

Propagation of a Single Photon in a 1-D Waveguide Coupled to a V-Type Atom

The area of waveguide quantum electrodynamics plays a signi cant role in many quantum technology applications. Photonic waveguides can be used to coherently transport photon pulses and can also efficiently increase the light-matter interaction strength. The work is done by Shen and Fan [1, 2] on the propagation of a photon pulse in a 1-D waveguide coupled to a single two-level emitter shows that a photon pulse can undergo complete reflection or transmission through the waveguide by controlling the coupling strength between the atom and the guided photon. We propose a V-type atomic system embedded in a 1-D waveguide and study the properties of an incoming photon pulse in the waveguide. We show that the driving field, which couples one of the atomic transitions, can be used as a controlling parameter to allow the photon pulse to be reflected or transmitted through the waveguide. As there reflection and transmission of the incident photon pulse can be externally controlled in our system, in comparison to the system suggested by Shen and Fan [1, 2], the proposed system in this thesis is more practiced than the system [1, 2]
